How's about AMSOIL HDD 5w30? It is a 3.5 HTHS as I recall.
This is a 2000 328i and has long been out of warranty, anyway.
S/B good for 15K even in severe service, which this probably ain't...
Probably good for a couple years regardless of the miles.

Hi OVERKILL,
First I should mention that the Cdn made SM version of the Mobil 1 0W-40 (HTHS 3.6cP, VI 187) we get is lighter than the SM and now the SN USA made oil, but of course it is still a long drain oil.
Having said that, running a premium oil like AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30 while lighter will not test the minimum viscosity requirements for your wife's 328i driven in a normal manner. The reason is, the oil temp's will not even hit 100C; ever.
That would including cruising at 149.999 km/h on the hottest summer day (you'll appreciate the significance of that figure).
Another option is any 5w30 syn' acquired on sale but don't push the OCI.

Yes Duron 0w30 is an option with it's decent 176 VI.

As a fellow 328 owner, I would say to go for a 0w30 due to the light driving style it sees. I am not sure if it is made, but Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra in 0w30 would be my choice for that engine under that usage. Or load up on Royal Purple 0w/5w30/40 when it goes on sale
Unfortunately Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra don't make a 0w30 oil grade not that it makes a big difference, as their 5w30 is still lighter than most 0W-30's except at extremely cold temp's.
