Unfortunately is it possible. I learned the hard way. Very, very unlikely but possible.
 
Cam timing being off, even 180 degrees out will cause the exhaust manifolds to glow at idle. Retarded timing will also do this. I wouldn't go and randomly adjust the cam timing without knowing which marks to use. You're playing with fire if this is an interference engine.
 
Thanks Buick - but I do know what timing marks to use - it's in the service manual - just as Trav posted. The thing is, the LH side is half a tooth off on either side of the dot, so one has to pick and choose. I likely picked the wrong side originally. We'll see though.

There's not much else to try at this point. It may have detonated, who knows. Detonation can be very hard to detect at times. If this is trash, I notice on Ebay they are selling JDM engines that look brand spanking new - I may consider plopping one of those in.
