Drivers for the mouse and or motherboard may need updating . Start with the manufacturer of the mouse for those drivers then move onto the motherboard manufacturer if it's custom or the brand manufacturer if it's a pre-built system.

Also could be an incorrect bios setting if the settings were reset due to backup battery failure or a mistake made.

Most likely either the BIOS setting isn't correct (i.e. which port to detect during boot) or the rear ports are through an internal USB hub that has malfunctioned.

I swear - and I vehemently reserve the right to be wildly inaccurate, here - that I once owned a cheap-o laptop where only one of the USB ports supplied the "spec" amount of voltage and current (I want to say 5V and half an amp?) out of the port. A USB mouse'd require some power for LED illumination and what-not; and I wonder if the manufacturer cheaped out on the USB port power.

The other, and more likely scenario, like PandaBear said, is that something is disabled in BIOS or busted.

I've got a question forgive me if I'm hijacking but i just looked at my USB ports(x3)two are normal but the one has "ss" listed next to it and the inside is blue where the others are black, any idea what the ss blue USB port means??

It means Super Speed, and is a USB 3.0 port.

You are quite welcome

It'll only benefit your Garmin if it is a USB 3.0 device however, otherwise you'll just get USB 2.0 speeds.

Mouse use very little current so in theory any port should be powerful enough for it. It is the cell phone charging and the USB hard drives that use a lot of current and need the more powerful ports.

Have you tried with nothing other than the keyboard and mouse? I've seen strange behavior with other devices plugged into a USB hub.

My daughter said her thumb drive wasn't working. Turned out, it wouldn't work when her iPod was plugged into the same USB hub. Remove the iPod and the thumb drive shows up.

Get it down to the bare minimum config, no USB devices other than the keyboard and mouse. If that works, it's something else plugged into the machine.
