Discovered during 6-month cleaning today that the back side of a tooth had sheared off a while back evidently (no pain). Tooth next to it has an infection pocket so take amoxcillin for a while. Question is in regard to the work & costs to see what might be typical. I live in Alabama. Yes, some of us have teeth, as in plural. Anyway here's the work & costs. Does this sound reasonable?

Tooth #5
Core buildup, including any pins: fee $338 - insurance $269.25 = $68.75
Crown - porcelain/ceramic substrate: fee $1,380 - insurance $1,239.25 =$14.75
Bicuspid tooth: fee $1,066 - insurance $953.50 = $112.50

Tooth #4
Core buildup, including any pins: fee $338 - insurance $269.25 = $68.75
Crown - porcelain/ceramic substrate: fee $1,380 - insurance $1,239.25 =$14.75

Total proposed $4,502
Total insurance $3,758
Total out of pocket $744.00

BTW, I had a crown on another tooth back in Nov-2006 & paid $441.50 out of pocket. I worked for the same company back then too.

That sounds real reasonable. My current insurance is so bad they don't want to cover a crown. Something about my age or whatnot that makes no sense. my previous insurance was great

You are getting a good deal. I have insurance and had a new crown installed today. Total cost after insurance was $546 which I thought was very reasonable and I have an amazing dentist who got me in right away. I would have been happy paying more. You get what you pay for. I really trust my dentist but I had a previous dentist who would do an implant even if I didn't really need it.

Those prices look reasonable. Even with insurance, going to the dentist here is very expensive. I feel bad for folks who do not have any coverage.

We are currently sending our two kids to school to cover for medical needs in a few years:
Child #1: in 3rd year med school
Child #2: in 2nd year dentistry
Should have had more children to send to nursing, physio, and optometry, etc.
:)

+1 in the "darn good" column.

I've always wondered if such a 'favorable anecdote' speaks to the nationwide performance of a company, in this case Delta Dental.
They, D.D., has billboards in NJ so I conclude they're national.

It's driven by the HR department of the employer. Delta Dental will do whatever the client wants.

DD is one of the scummiest insurers out there because they have the largest market share in many states. There has been a huge push in dental community to drop participation with them. We dropped them 4 years ago after they hadn’t increased fees for 9 years and they were planning to reduce fees by 30% which would mean they pay about as well as Medicaid. They have temporarily halted the 30% fee reduction due to backlash but they have put other barriers in place with how they bundle fees, deny procedures, and they are eliminating DD Premier and forcing everyone to participate with their PPO. They are beasts to deal with and so we don’t anymore.

They are not technically national. Every states has their own distinct DD that falls under a larger umbrella corporation.
