Hi,
this is the latest Used Oil Analysis result from my Porsche Boxster (986) 2.7ltr Tiptronic

Engine data
M9622 & Tiptronic @ 126658 kms (78655 miles)

Operation over 15410 kms (9570 miles) - 17+ months

A number of long high speed trips (80%) and a small amount (20%) of Urban running. Revs rarely above 6500. An on-road water pump failure occurred. The water pump was replaced but the oil was not changed
The car is located in the Australian Tropics - humidity up to 98%, minimum temperature in period -4C, highest temperature 42C. Normal cold start range 15-27C

While I was in Europe the car stood idle for about 7 weeks

No top up lubricant was added

Laboratory: Mobil, Yarraville Melbourne

Lubricant: Mobil's Delvac 1 5w-40 (CI-4/SL)

(Previous Report's results shown in brackets - oldest to right)

Lubricant condition:
Water = 0.00 (0.00) (NA)
Fuel = 0.00 (0.00) (NA)
Viscosity @ 40C = 89 (87) (88) cSt
TBN = NA (NA) (6.4)
TAN = 4.7 (3.3) (NA)
Soot Index = 0.1 (0.1) (NA)
PQ Index =
Elemental analysis:
Iron = 14 (3) (12)
Aluminium = 7 ( Chromium = 1 ( Copper = 16 ( Lead = 1 ( Potassium = 3 (2) (6)
Silicon = 14 (8) (18 due to gasket sealant)
Sodium = 1 (1) (5)
Tin =
Summary
Mobil's Lab has not taken 100C viscosity readings now for some years - in their opinion only viscosity at 40C is relevant. They only use TAN instead of TBN in UOAs

Whilst the lubricant was obviously still suitable for continued use I changed it and the filter due to an impending long (3500kms/2173miles) high speed journey next week

Hi,
tpitcher - Over the many hundreds of UOAs on operating engines in my database I have only a handful where I thought a glance at the lubricants structure was required

Mobil's Lab has not done this type of additive breakdown unless requested or unless the lubricant displays a "look closer" requirement

Castrol's Lab will do this when requested or as for Mobil

I have used these Labs and Shell for some decades

Some other Labs here such as "Wear Check" do an additive breakdown. I believe that CAT operates the same as Mobil and Castrol

Doug. at least the Suzuki is a manual.

Actually Steve, if I'm not mistaken,the Suzuki Bergman has a CVT.

Hi,
REDDOG - Yes, the Burgman has an electrically controlled CVT - developed by two smart Engineers at Suzuki about 12 years ago. It is similar in action to Porsche's Tiptronic. Both can be driven manually and the "manual" shifts are lightening fast with ratios bing "held" as required. The Burgman has five "manual" ratios and an overdrive

The fastest Porsches on the tortuous Nurburgring are usually Tipronic equipped. The last time I drove there made me realise just how many shifts are really needed

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!! Manual good CVT bad.

Hi Doug, looks good.

Have all the previous reports been with the same 5W-40 oil?
Any reports with the factory spec' 0W-40?

I know you've mentioned the reason for the switch to the heavier oil is the somewhat higher coolant temps you're running.
Now that Mobil have increased the HTHS vis of their 0W-40 to 3.8cP any thoughts of going back to the spec' oil? I appreciate that you live in tropics (lucky guy) but the much lower KV40 of 75cSt and higher VI of 185 are attractive elements even in the tropics.... just a thought.

Regards,

While M1 0W-40 is readily available and reasonably priced,
Castrol Edge 0W-40 isn't marketed at all in NA (and has no plan to), which is odd considering how many vehicles specify the grade.

Hi,
CATERHAM - The Edge range is very good and most versions are readily available here in OZ. Their 0W-40 is about 2/3 the price of M1. Both Castrol & Mobil are rebranding but it sure takes time!

I've just booked my accommodation & Tickets for the Goodwood Revival in 2011. I may even get to drive a Caterham!

All my msds that i did through cat so far list everything exept for tbn. THey show all wear and additive info, soot, water etc. Very similar to Blackstone.

Hi Doug,

It's strange what oil companies decide to sell in various markets and their pricing schemes.
Castrol doesn't sell it's 0W-XX grades at all in Canada and what it does offer is at least 30% more expensive than M1. It's list price per litre is $12.99 which puts it in the boutique oil category. Both Red Line and RLI are cheaper.

I'm familiar with the Goodwood Festival of Speed in early July (it's on my bucket list) but I wasn't aware of the Goodwood Revival that's held in September. It sounds neat though.

I was touring southern England in a rental car in Sept of 2000, when I kept seeing vintage cars enjoying the countryside. I asked a water works museum worker what the deal was, and he told me about Goodwood. I drove there immediately. Barry Sheene was racing a vintage motorcycle when I arrived.

It was the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and they had flyovers with Spitfires and Mustangs.

The highlight was the feature race which John Surtees led early in a Ferarri, before turning the car over to the owner. Danny Sullivan won in a Shelby Daytona Coupe after taking the car from the owner.

What a great day of racing. It was the highlight of my trip. The rain came the next day.

Doug, I forgot to mention, if you do get the opportunity to drive a Caterham while you're in England you'll be in for a real treat.
Nothing really compares to it; it's like driving a Formula Ford on the street!
