We have a Dell desktop with a 13th generation processor (i5-13400). It's one small step away from the list of processors that Intel admits were defective and our desktop was crashing regularly when it was new (which sounds a lot like the problem with the defective processors). It's been better for the past few months since the Dell tech guys made a raft of alterations.

Our warranty with Dell is set to expire Oct 15, 2024.

So we'd like to call Dell and get our concerns on record before the warranty expires. The 1-800 tech support number (1-800-847-4096) no longer works and when we call it they (? telephone company, ? Dell) wants to sell us the new 1-800 number. It's not a lot of money, but honestly! Our warranty is still active. You call that Tech support?

Does anyone have an active and current Dell 1-800 Tech support number?

Try (800) 624-9896.

What alterations? Did you have a tech come out and replace parts?

I used to work there 97-06 in various tech support roles. There is a backend system where they log the call and can notate your concerns.

I think your processor is OK. I have not had any problems with Intel processors one step above yours. I built 2 PCs using 13th gen i5-13500 retail processors, one PC last February and the other last May. One PC has been updated with microcode BIOS and the other will be updated shortly. No issues, no crashes with the BIOS, CPUs or other components. One PC is used by my grand-daughter for gaming and I use my PC for trading stocks with 16 TradingView charts filled with indicators and about 20 websites open on 3 monitors. I've checked Intel and other forums and have not found anything to suggest that the i5-13500 processor is defective.

Once damaged, the CPU will continue to crash and accumulate more damage. Your CPU has not been crashing lately.

When I need support for my Dell laptops, I go to the Dell website and open a support session by chat. Are you comfortable using chat?

In my opinion, Dell cannot do much for you until Intel finds an issue with your processor. Dell will warranty your motherboard, so if you are still nervous about something breaking, why not buy one more year of warranty coverage?

866-516-3115 is the number I've always called. It's been a few years since I've done end user computing support, but I still have the number memorized... not sure if that's a bad thing or not. 🤪

No hardware changes, just a lot of setting changes (made on a few occasions over several weeks). I have to admit it has been better since they made the setting changes. The concern is whether it will stay fixed.

Your suggested 1-800 number is active. Thank you.

That is good to hear. I was on the phones until 2002ish, then in the background doing data analysis, process improvement and automation for the rest of my tenure.

Back then CPUs were the most reliable hardware component, I believe it may still be that way today. Memory came in second, motherboards, drives, and power supplies rounded out the bottom in reliability. Laptops it’s a hot mess with many more variables.

We talked to Dell Tech Support. The tech had never heard of the problems with 13 and 14th generation processors. We provided her with actual Dell references which she looked up.

The upshot is we now have an updated Bios and a recommendation we contact Intel if we have problems in the future. Doesn't give you a warm and fuzzy feeling exactly, but it's a not very expensive CPU, it's currently working and it's hopefully okay.

And thanks to @cptbarkey we didn't have to pay to get an updated 1-800 Dell Tech Support 1-800 number. I've carefully recorded the number for future reference (and recommend all Dell customers do the same).

Yeah, denying a trend was standard operating procedure, with rare exceptions like exploding capacitors on motherboards that the Chinese stole the formula from Japan and botched things up. We basically replaced every single one because we had to or your house could burn down.

I'm not aware of current CPU issues but will start digging, my son is requesting an upgrade. Something about how his new video card is bottle necked. My pocketbook is in for it ;)

One good thing is Dell will continue to publish BIOS and driver updates well after the product is no longer being sold and the max 5 year warranties run out.
