Deere JX-75 walk-behind trans grease

I have the case opened to inspect and i'm replacing the seals and the grease. What grease is recommended or best to use and does it need to be packed full?

There are a series of straight-cut gears and a few ball bearings. Grease that came out was black and could be moy....not sure. Production date is 5/03 and the gears look excellent.

Google "bentonite grease". That's what I'd use.

i6pwr, I just bought a jx75 last week, one owner, lightly used, the guy bought a high wheel Husqvarna, front wheel drive from Lowes. He said the Deere wouldn't start. I gave him 70 dollars and fled the scene! Brought it home and cleaned the carb and it started the first pull! This mower cost 800 dollars new in 1998! The tuff torque tranny is practically bulletproof,but I have been pondering servicing the tranny. Keep us posted on your service. Thanks,G-man

Gman....nice score! I actually picked mine up for $50 2 years ago and was meticulously maintained and the owner sold it for the same reason.

These carbs are extremely finicky when the [censored] gas gets gelled up in the float. Just to be sure to run it dry via the fuel cutoff switch or just drain the bowl by the screw.

The trans is likely fine, upon disassembly I realized it was but I heard a "clicking" when the wheels were engaging. Not a series of clicks bit a single click so I wanted to be sure everything was good. Most likely crud in the drive gear on the wheel but I sprayed cleaner on the case and the 2 seals swelled right up so i'm going to replace them this weekend.....$8 a piece

but that's my fault.

All the gears look fine and the bearings are tight. I agree....these mowers are prob the finest walk-behinds you can get, especially the deck.

I had a typo in my original post...any chance the factory grease is a moly? If I can't fint the Bentonite locally what would be another option?
