One might argue that the folks in DC really aren't using it or it's ideals, so we might as well sell it off to someone who migh use it and pay off some of the debt
All DC needs is a picture or replica of it anyway! I'm sure some enthusiast out there would appreciate it much more than some snotty brats on a grade school field trip

All laughing aside, I have a goverment job and my job is *mission critical* In other words i have sworn in, i must report, However if the goverments shut down come payday im not getting a check.. I think its funny on CNN they say law enforcement will continue to work.. what they dont say is they will continue to work but dont get a check on payday... Of course when the goverment re-opens i get paid and my back pay, however that doesnt help when you need your next check.. Or (devils advocate) This lasts a while, i have to pay to get to a job, gas, lunch etc.. moneys still coming out of my pocket to come do the work.. but i dont know when they are going to pay me for it.. Dont get me started on the Federal employees pay freeze.. Our pay has been locked for 3 years with NO end in sight.. evrything else is getting more expensive, but my pay remains the same.. And every stinking year the same politicians that vote to not give us a raise ALWAYS GIVE THEMSELVES A RAISE.. what a crock.

NON-essentail Federal employees are simply Furloughed "layed off" without pay
Im a essential Federal employee.. and there are alot of essentail employees that are still doing the work of keeping Americans safe... were just not going to get paid for our services untill this is all over.. Let me tell you that stinks when your mortgage payments due..
Congress is still getting paid, but there using my job as a political pawn.. I make pennies compared to congress and i assure you my job is much more dangerous..

My wife's job as a GS is intelligence analysis for the USN, she is furloughed. Did our enemies suddenly turn peaceful? Do we no longer need to worry about them?
Different departments and agencies have interpreted the guidance differently. For example, the DOJ thinks that it is mission critical, so no lawyers have been laid off, too many political investigations going on....
You're considered "essential" through an accident of administration...not because what you do is more important than anyone else.
So, she's already had forced days off, now she's furloughed, and yet contractors for the DOD are still getting paid to do similar work, and at higher pay rates. It is a common myth that government workers are overpaid, but in her case, as a GS-13, she makes much less than the contractors with whom she works. The trade off was supposed to be job security for that lower pay...so much for that promise...the clear message is: you, your work, and your family don't matter.
We still have college tuition due next month...and the mortgage...not getting paid makes that a bit more difficult.
further, my sailors in my reserve unit are going unpaid this month...inactive duty (drill) is suspended. Many of them count on that weekend paycheck to support their families. Junior enlisted are not among the highest paid in life, but they're being made to take the pain in this political game as well...
Sorry, this doesn't belong in the humor section...because, for the hundreds of thousands whom this affects, being a political pawn isn't funny.

While I feel for you personally as a human being my comment was directed at the massive hypocrisy of a media trumpeting who is "at fault" for our situation. Seems like more than one Party is involved deeply and both have huge axes just a-grindin'. The spin is sickening to me.
As you illustrated, there is a real human cost. I sympathize completely with your plight, but I remain disgusted that our own representatives don't seem to work for "us" anymore!

At some point, we have to face the $17 Trillion dollar gorilla in the room.
Then, the furlough of a hundred thousand to a million federal employees will seem like the "good old days."
Sad that my cynical mind doesn't believe they will do anything about the big problem. Instead, choosing to snipe one at another over issues in the margins.
When you are borrowing $0.40 of every dollar spent by the federal government, it's time to determine there are many more things that are not essential and stop doing them.
Can't do that all at once. But at some point, we need to unwind this thing before 100% of federal spending is money borrowed from others.
