Same model car, same features. One is a 2012 with 55k miles and the other is a 2015 with 88k. Both have great service records. Pretty much a coin toss, right?

FAIW I like the color of the 2015 better.

It all comes down to condition.
Which is in the best condition?
Any idea how the miles were put on? For instance, 88K highway is easier on the vehicle than 55K city for instance.
If condition is equal, go for the newest. The increased mileage isn't going to make a whole lot of difference in the value of a 9 year old car.
Since you like the color better on the 2015, get that one if you wish.

I personally would rather have newer with more miles. Mileage doesn't seem to hurt cars much anymore - not with the big things - assuming the maintenance is caught up and its not a trouble prone design. However hoses, electronics, etc seem to have a life span measured in years, not miles. So personally I would take newer all other things being equal.

The fact that its a better color is bonus.

Given the age of both cars, they’ve been driven less than the average miles per year. They both have good mileage and they both have good service records,…it’s a coin toss IMO since you say they’re identical (same model, same features).
You like the color of the 2015, pick that one being all things are equal.

Now, the big question, what exactly are we talking about? Make, model, drivetrain?

Depends on make and model.

For example, F150 those years are totally different. And I would take the 2012.

Exactly. Saw this in action when I was looking for a 2006 car in 2016. The one I got had 81k for $14k. There were examples with 15-20k miles asking $23k. It's 2024 and the car I bought has 140k. Being mfg in 9/05, what benefit would it be as I type, to say my car has 80k not 140k? Time, not mileage, is the enemy now. When there are examples of my car going 300, 400, 500, 1 mil miles, am I ever going to be able to drive that many, when I'm at 140k today? "Low miles" is a selling point from the olden days of yore....jmoymmv

Insurance and tire cost? tossing that out there.

Flip a coin I’d say. You like the newer one more, that’s good, but don’t underestimate what the interior looks like, that is what you see the most.

Most of the groups I belong to believe the opposite. SAt least from engine and reliability.
That may be true for their opinions but I'm looking at it as a whole not just the engine. 2015 is safer crash rating as an example. Which is what I put some emphasis into but some could care less about that.
