I keep hearing about how great brand x dsl is.What about those non telco? brands, such as dslextreme? are they any good? They advertise as 14.95 or so,but how good are they?

If DSLxtreme was really lousy, they'd be out of business by now. I don't have any personal experience with them but they have been around for a very long time.

Avoid Century Link at all costs.
The day we dumped them was the happiest day of our life...(well, almost).

horrible CS, paid for 10 MB and never saw more than 3-4 MB.

Century Link had no record of my phone line having high speed internet access. I found out from one of the local techs working on the lines in front of my house I actually did have DSL. Due to no records for DSL out here they refused to send anyone to hook me up despite me telling thier upper managment what the tech told me. Finally ran into the tech again about 6 months later and he talked to someone and came back a few days later and got me hooked up.

Um, no.

We have this wonderful thing that's been around for over a decade where our internet is delivered over the coax from a cable company.

I had cable interent as far back as 2001. It was a 1Mbps down and 256k up. Last speedtest I ran a few days ago was 19.5Mbps down and 1.95Mbps up.

I know a handful of people still on DSL. They fall into the categories of: A) cable internet not available in area or B) their web usage is such they don't see any benefit to upgrading to a faster (cable) connection. Mostly, its A.

and the cable company (TV and all) is a massive ripof too. I have better things to do with my time and money than spend a ton to watch TV. I like fast internet, but dont watch TV on here (again, other things to do besides wasting my time), and only need big bandwidth once in a while to upload a few hundred MB of photos into emails or something.

same here.29.00 service is more than enough for me.Hardly ever watch tv

People's opinions of DSL vs cable is mostly driven by the companies that deliver it and how they deliver it rather than any deficiencies in the technology.

DSL was first on my street; I know for a fact that there is a major fiber junction for SE CT in a CO about 10 houses away; Service, and I have had up to 6Mbs, has been rock solid for 10 years. I don't have cable television, nor do I want bundled services.

My Question: can one watch TV (like hulu) on DSL? Because it's about the heaviest thing we use the interenet for....
