Dealership oil change price

What's really weird are the competitive brand used car people who are like this. I get it if they have a maintenance package or coupons, but there are people who will not go anywhere else. I had a guy go ballistic because we didn't have a fog light kit in stock for a nearly fifteen year old Dodge Dakota that he bought as is at our Chevy dealer, and that I couldn't give him price and availability without first calling a Dodge dealer.
People think you are exaggerating, but if anything you are toning it down. I got absolutely cussed out because we, a Ford and Mazda dealer, didn't have a parts catalog on hand for a 63 Plymouth. He couldn't understand why I dumped all of our paper catalogs for anything 79 and older along with our microfiche in the dumpster. It might be good info, but everything was obsolete and I was tired of wasting time with them.

I dropped my F150 off at my dealer to balance my oversize tires and update the ECM for the speed sensor TSB.

I had them do an oil change while it was in as I didn't have time and was heading up North to go ATV'n.
They charged me $50.00 for 6 qts of Motorcraft 5W20 SB and a MC filter. A great deal, IMO!
That's a fair deal IMO

A MC 5qt Bundle w/MC filter would cost $30+tax at my local Advance

+$6 or so for the extra quart, plus labor/overhead/rags and brake cleaner etc

There's not much money being made on that, and that's a more an reasonable deal for those who can't/won't DIY

If I get the car back with the underhood looking like the Exxon Valdez and a stripped out drain plug and a hand loose oil filter, I'm gonna be pissed tho 😡

That's why I don't use my local Toyota store service department

Local dealership in the Buffalo area (Transitowne Dodge) charges $15 for regular oil change and $25 for synthetic oil. No appointments, so it’s wise to show up at 7:30AM or you will wait a few hours. I have a Fiat 500 with close to 180,000 miles and they use Mopar filters and Quaker State oil from bottles.

They are losing money on every change.

They generate tons of work from these cheap oil changes.
On Fiats ? Will they even do any work on those beyond real, basic stuff ? For Chrysler vehicles, and no doubt various domestic brands, sure they won't be as hesitant to work on those.

They do any car and any make. The Fiats are actually extremely easy to work on. I use a local Indy shop and they do a great job. Approaching 180,000 trouble free miles. Other than maintenance the only repair was a thermostat. And I drive this little Fiat hard.

I don't mind paying the higher prices for oil changes. The only problem is I want it done right and I don't trust dealerships or most shops to constantly service vehicles correctly without a major screw up. I have one good mechanic shop in my area however I prefer to do oil and filter changes myself. By the time I drive to a shop, have them change the oil and filter I can be finished doing it myself at home.

On a billboard ? Can you read their fine-print on that billboard ? 😁 There's gotta be some !!

total disclaimer: I’m in my 70’s and the fine print if there is any escapes me. It was / is a real promotion . I did find this on their Facebook page , but is from 7 years ago. In my years that’s like yesterday ;)

Okay I did some searching and came across this.

https://www.cars.com/dealers/21379/doenges-ford-lincoln-toyota/

When they offer a service for a low price that is known as a loss leader. In this case that price is way way low. That barely covers anything. There must be a catch.

It has been a few years, but I recall bringing my SO’s Focus into the Doenges dealership not long after we moved back to my hometown which was about 8+ years ago.

I was too busy to do the OC on her car, IIRC, the price was the advertised $9.95 but the service writer did her darnest to up-sell other services. ie as you say, a typical “loss leader”.

I’ve been a customer of the dealership for decades, and knew the original owner when I was a kid and the dealership, like all the others, was in the same downtown block. Here’s a photo from those days circa the Fall of 1965 just after the ‘66 models were released

PS
I got to ride in the Cobra sitting next to the dealership owner before it was delivered. Pretty cool for a 15 year old kid.
