So my Sister bought my Daughters 07 Versa from her as She is moving away. It had a few known issues. One of them was the rear hatch wouldn't open. So She took it to the local Nissan dealer for repair. She called me telling me that they quoted her $1,300 for the hatch and also told her that the CV joints were shot. That would be another $700. Her Husband was out of town as he is the one that normally would take it in for repair. I couldn't look at it due to a broken leg. So I told her to take it to a local shop that I use once in a while. She took it there and explained what was wrong and they proceeded to fix it for her. CV joints were fine. They repaired the hatch using Nissan parts from the same dealer. Only cost her $400 total. BTW the shop rate is the same at both shops.

There is a reason why they call them "$tealerships".

I consider this activity you mention at that store FRAUD, plain and simple. I'm surprised that they didn't split the CV boots just to cover their attempt to steal from your sister.

Dealers do that because they are allowed to. Had some ridiculous dealings with Nissan dealers with an 08 Sentra I used to have. Car was brand new under warranty and they wanted a $180 diagnostic fee to look at it in cash non refundable but can be used towards repairs. I was like what in the world? Called Nissan and they said the dealer was allowed to do that because someone has to pay the tech if he finds nothing wrong with it, and we all know they never do if it is under warranty. Tried another dealer because this was absurd and they said the same thing. Needless to say the car got traded, never repaired and will never deal with Nissan EVER again for any reason. So at this point nothing surprises me, oh and I have worked at several dealers on the service end of things and you don't even want to know what goes on in the service dept. It is sad because by definition the dealership should be the place to go and they should be the place that can service their product and most are not only totally incompetent but just a rip off if they do actually touch the car. It's a sad world out there, but it happens because they are allowed to do it.

Glad she was smart! Got to really hate any shop that tries to rip women off, especially dealers.

They dont make much money selling a new car,so its the repairs and maintenance on the old ones that bring in the bucks. The shop bays pay for the cars out front.Bad sales out front (or selling lots of low profit Versas,Sentras...) and the shop shenanagins come to full force. That and the mechanic/servicewriter are probably getting a cut of every non needed repair...

Required reading for young female drivers... I've been dealer free for 3 years... will drive by them at times and give them the number 1 sign... internet sites like this can help you fix just about anything... with my very limited time and driveway I've pulled off some cool fixes...
rear hatch... they do have problems at times... springs, levers, plastic pieces locks... maybe wanna take them apart if you can at times to inspect/lube... lotta dirt collects on the rear deck of a hatch back... I'm betting this coulda been a home fix... junkyard parts possibly...

When you sit in the dealers elegant waiting room watching cable TV drinking complimentary coffee somebody's got to pay for it.

Also, the idea of several salaried 'service advisors' annoys me.....isn't my owners manual my 'service advisor'?

So you think the dealer should just donate their tech's time to you to do diagnosis on something that isnt necessarily there? Did you have good basis for what was wrong?

A but different than the OP's situation - where while dealers do mark up parts bigtime, the charges seemed excessive and possibly incorrect.

There are crooked dealers and there are straight dealers. Just like there are crooked independents and straight independents. Sadly, paying too much and getting lousy results is epidemic. Not just in auto repair; in nearly all forms of hired services.

I had no idea that there where manufactures that charged for warranty diagnostics. GM pays our diagnostics for warranty complaints…

When I took my Nissan to the Dealer for service, they explained it this way:

There will be a diagnosis charge for finding the problem if you don't get it fixed here, if you get it repaired here, it is waived.

Not sure how much it was, think it was like $80. Seems fair, some people may have been using the dealer to find the problem and then fixing it them selves.

To be honest, it's always been a hit or a miss with dealers for me. For the most part, however, the tech is more concerned with finishing off the job within the given timeframe than doing a quality job - which is often why I took my cars to the dealership in the first place. Now I just do the work on it myself.

I took my Grand Marquis to the Ford/Lincoln (Mercury) dealer last summer to replace the heater core. It was simply something I did not have the time to undertake and I didn't want to take it to just anywhere - given the total disregard to job quality, broken trim pieces are very common around here. Guess what - not only did I find nuts and bolts missing after the job was completed, but they turned the whole thing into a circus show.

The tech never connected the lighting control switch and I got a ticket 15 minutes after driving out the lot because I couldn't turn my [censored] headlights on. My auto dim rearview mirror wasn't functioning either, because the genius working on the car tore the wiring apart. And guess what - they wanted to charge me $90 at the time to "diagnose" what the problem was when it was evidently clear. A monkey could have told you what the problem was. Then the charge goes up to $90 for diagnostics plus $117 to solder the wires back together - $207 all together. My question to the service manager was "Do I look like an idiot to you?"

To make it even worse, my HVAC blower was only functioning on high because the resistor burnt up. The blower resistor and pigtail assembly was replaced less than 3 months before the heater core job. The service manager's response was "We don't know whether or not it was functioning before you brought the car". You ****ing **hole you, that's why you are supposed to thoroughly check everything before letting the vehicle in.

When the job was completed, the labor rate I was being charged was $891 instead of the $400 I agreed to and they took 17 hours to complete a 9 hour job! Had a word with the aftersales manager, who reversed the charges and canceled the blower resistor/mirror connector and headlamp switch charge so I'll give them that.

The other disaster was topping up the coolant. I supplied 6 gallons of Motorcraft Premium Gold Coolant mixed (50/50) with distilled water for them to top up the system. I told the service advisor AND I left a note on the dash for the tech. What does the tech do - refill with straight tap water. I was raging at the time and here's the extra bonus I got with the job:

1. The front passenger door trim was scratched, because the tech did not remove the dashboard from the cabin. When he shut the driver's door, the dash bashed into the passenger side trim.

2. The ashtray/cupholder was badly scratched.

3. The power adjustable pedal harness was loose and had to be secured.

4. The driver's side upper kick panel was missing its plastic screws, so the trim is hanging loose.

5. The driver's side knee protector was held in place with one bolt.

The last bit gets better. The whole service department complained to the aftersales manager because he dropped the charges from the $891 they came up with to the $400 we agreed on and they didn't get their bonuses for turning my vehicle to a nightmare on wheels.

I spent the next couple of weeks replacing scratched parts, replacing missing bolts and nuts and flushing the cooling system. The whole fiasco cost me well over $2,800. If I had to do it all over again, I've got three other vehicles I can use - I'll do the [censored] job myself however long it takes.

Buy yourself an OBD II scanner.

Jiffy Lube upsold my sister the other day. She has a 2013 Corolla that's got 8k. Got an oil change at the Jiff and they told her her air filter was dirty. She went with it and got it replaced, $40.

8k miles. She only tells me after the fact.

The Saturn dealer was a scary place to take my Saturn. My favorite was they were trying to tell me I should change my fuel filter (60,000 mile service) every 30,000 miles "based on their experiences in Northeast Ohio". Oh really? How many clogged fuel filters have you guys seen? Uh, not sure, but there's road salt around here, so there's more rust in the fuel system. Oh really? How does a plastic fuel tank rust, and how does the rust get inside the fuel system? Strangely, he couldn't come up with an explanation for that.

I hate it when they play silly games like that. Prove to me that you're seeing lots of clogged fuel filters; don't just make up some baloney and try to sell services more frequently than what the manufacturer says.
