99 4runner v6 2wd 148k, i have been hearing a roar from the rear and some mild vibrations also, took it to the yota dealer and they say the carrier is bad, quoted me $1650, parts and labor. the carrier assembly is $1250. no way im paying that to fix my car. what other options do you guys suggest ?

Get a low miles used differential from local auto wrecker. $250 at most, and you put it in yourself. Or take the diffy to a indy shop and have them put it in

Yep wrecking yard. You can buy a lot of used ones for that price. Might want to run Amsoil, or Mobil synthetic gear lube if you haven't done so. Do you get any water intrusion into the axle? If so you want to change it more often.

Should be easy to bolt in place. Or fairly reasonable to have a shop do it.

+2

Common truck with a common rear end - get a good (not leaking...no issues) rear and and swap them...I think there's only one ratio for them...

The nice thing about the toyota diffys is (if the still make them like my 99 4Runner's) that they are like the Ford 9". They have a unit center section and you can just slip the axles out (can't remember if toyotas have c-clips but I doubt it) and you unbolt the whole center section from the axle housing and pull it out. Use a transmission jack or a floor jack. Slap the new one in and bolt it up, slide the axles back into the side gears and you're done.

You don't have to set up the ring/pinion because it all came out as a unit, and the replacement goes in as a unit.

It's a nice design, and truly a driveway job.

You went to the dealership with an out of warranty Toyota!

Just for the heck of it, I wonder if Redline Shock-Proof rear diff fluid or even a Mobil 1 fluid would work well enough to buy you some time??

talked to a local mechanic about the dealer saying i need a new carrier assembly, he thinks i should let him have a look because it could just be a carrier bearing or a pinion bearing that needs to be replaced. i have found a used carrier assembly for $250, and that seems like the way to go to me, what do you guys think ?

An independent driveline shop is who I'd take it to.

They're going to be familiar with the setup since that's what they do all day.

take it to a reputable local mechanic. Have him diagnose it aswell, and usually that money sometimes goes to the repair. Dont just buy the axle and have it replaced. It could be a ton of different things.

or a driveline shop is a good idea too.

Have you priced a used rear end from a salvage yard?

Are you able to swap the rear yourself?

For the most part, the dealer is usually still the place with the best trained and most up-to-date techs for working on your make of vehicle.

That is way too general of a statement and is not always true.

Local dealers in our area are losing people left and right due to low work volume. The highest paid ones go first.

I'd def fix it. a 99 'runner is in my mind, the end of an era of classic SUVs. Now they're all independent suspension, getting a little heavy in the midriff... keep that baby running!

found a used rear diff, how many hrs labor is it going to take for a local mechanic to put this in ?
