Dealer Documentation Fees

So I have been shopping for a car in Oregon and why are all the dealers charging more than the $150 "hard capped" state limit?

Something tells me this chart is not right.

The dealership sales model is baked into the car business. I love paying for those big beautiful dealerships...
Kinda funny, in Texas, you have to buy a Tesla online, out of state, or something like that due to state franchise laws. It seems Texas does not allow the direct sales model. Perhaps this will change?

When I worked in the business we knew that the 'doc fee' money went into a separate account for the owner. Think about that.
A doc fee is complete and total BS. It is a scam. It should be called 'additional dealer profit'. You do not have to pay it. If a dealer insists then have them reduce the price of the car by the doc fee, that way it washes.

Dealers make a profit on the cars they sell and service. That is what pays for the office staff needed to run a business. NOT the doc fee add on BS.

I've seen a lot of dealership deal summaries that show their costs and what was paid. Some of the margins are absolutely disgusting. And yes, it doesn't matter what the doc fee is because they will account for it somewhere else. The house always wins...

A well known national dealership (3 dealerships nearby same owner) in Merriam KS is charging $699. As noted, Kansas has no upper limit to the fee.
Ouch! Seems a bit steep, Especially when the avg is $400.

When I'd winter down in TX there were at least one or more Tesla buildings. I have no idea what they are used for but seemed to be no activity. Housing cars, Repair locations?? They were not big buildings & had a lot of garage doors in the front.

Had a dealer in Illinois want to charge $1,200 for a doc/admin fee when we were looking at vans. Lol, no.

Let me guess the ones on the north side of I35? Baron was $500 I think, but I still had to call them after waiting forever. They didn't win a long term customer.

And they just key in a few things into an app and the app spits out all the documents. Not like someone is typing it all in.
LOL they tried not printing anything for me, just scrolled up and down on a screen and wanted me to sign a digital terminal like the kind at the Walmart pharmacy.

They were quick to print out the 22 page document. I was slow to read it. If they wanted me to finish faster, they could have left some gotchas out.

Someone should have demanded the change before building the gigafactory.

I hate dealers in general, but the fee is just part of the OTD price - so buyers simply need to negotiate properly. I don't care where they assign the profit only how big the check I write is.

Taxes, fees, etc. In car buying, it is all about the bottom line.

Ok, so there is a cap at $85 in CA..........if all the dealers in the area decide to just raise the price $500..........then the doc fee just was upped to $585.............No matter where it lands on the 4 square, the bottom line is what matters.

I always demand that they reveal the entire out the door purchase price before I sign on the dotted line on a document that has that total.

To me, registration and title fees paid to the State are legitimate documentation charges. Anything beyond that is fluff. What next, they will want to have a surcharge to make you pay your share of their electric bill?

If you are referring to a chain that has a tight relationship with NASCAR, they were trying to charge $700 at their Acura dealership 8 years ago. Baron was far more willing to cut their fee.
