Dropped my daughters 2012 cpo jetta off for a recall, blower motor making noise and an oil change which I would normally do but since it was there I let them do it. I dropped it off after service close and dropped keys in the mail slot. They said there was some debris in cabin filter and did not charge for that. When I went to get the car there was a 12-18inch crack in the windshield. Since I dropped it after hours I asked to see the check in report and there was a crack listed on the sheet. I told the guy I drove it 7 miles and there is no way I didnt see this crack. Originally he said I would have to pay out of pocket. I told him ok but told him once again it wasnt broken, but I need to get it fixed so do it. He called me back and said the dealer would take care of it at their cost. I dont know how it showed a crack on report as I know there wasnt one also I asked daughter if she ever saw the crack and she confirmed no crack. The windshield show no sign of being damaged by a rock btw. Overall I am quite pleased they did the right thing...

I didnt take a pic but it was on passenger side a backwards L from the A pillar

old trick:
try running a ballpoint pen over the crack if it catches anywhere it was from an impact.

I had one I thought was a stress fracture from offroading.. but sure enough there was an impact you couldnt see.

One of my windshield cracked due to heat stress. I was stupid by blowing cold AC air on the windshield in a hot parked car. Over time it cracked the windshield from the bottom.

Just about every insurance policy has free glass replacement. Although your dealer did the right thing. It wouldn't have been a major issue and if you check your car insurance, I am pretty sure it has free windshield replacement for a crack. State farm will even cover side and rear windows.

Didn't know you could do that. I wouldn't just drop my car off randomly for the reason right here. What happens if the car gets stolen? I'm sorry sir we have no record of your car being here, now you have to use your insurance instead of the having the dealer use theirs since they have insurance for that kind of thing. I would think.... Maybe you would still have to use your insurance, but you get the idea.

On the occasions when I need to drop my car off for repairs, I almost always drop it off the night before. I do what's convenient for me. I have insurance so I don't need to worry about these types of situations. I'm covered.

Cars are designed for that as it occurs every waking day. A finger pressing on windshield would put more stress on glass then that.

Unless the dealer is located in a very good and safe area, I would NEVER, drop my car off at any shop or dealer the night before and leave my keys in the drop slot! You are asking for trouble, because the dealers all have signs posted that they are NOT responsible for theft or stolen property while the vehicle is sitting on their property.

I've heard of plenty of incidents where a clever thief is able to retrieve those keys out of the drop box or slot and drive off. It happened to a dealer I used to work at over 25 years ago!

You may be covered with your insurance, but you still have the hassle of working things out with them and of course you are inconvenienced in the mean time.
