This post is a responce to Bob the oil guys experament with oil addatives---I have a 01 Indian scout, 88 ci s&s evolution engine ( like the Harley's) 14K total mi. It ran beautifull--I have only put 750 miles on it since I bought it----On its 1st oil change by me , about 500 mi.ago, I went to pep boys and bought lucas 20-50 full synthetic and put it in----A week or 2 later I added PROLONG in the proportion as used in autos. There after, When I would get my bike up to speed around 3000 rpm, the oil light would blink every so often --What the H--- is going on, cant find any reason . I tried 2 leave town on hwy 99 @ 70 mph and when the bike was good and warmed up,the
light started to blink and would only shut off at 20-30 mph ,Oil pressure on these engines run 6-10 lbs. When I got it in to the shop I checked the wire and oil sending unit--"all OK".. A guage check showed 1/2 lbs at idle and 1 lbs at 2500rpm..Checked oil in oil bag and it appeared to have changed color ( airated????)
The drained oil showed metalflake an bits of metal in the drain pan --All while the bike seemed to run good--I pulled the motor and found wiped ringes and exhaust valve guides--What happened --We couldnt find reason for no oil pressure--- I thought some one may of sabatoged my bike ---Then I thought maybe contamination at Lucas plant-- I typed on the net, LUCAS OIL CONTAMINATION an up came oil guys site with the lucas experament.NOW it seems to me that lucas oil and prolong probley airated the oil to such a extent that the oil light could not stay shut off at higher rpms due to too much air in the system--as in air in brakes cant push the brakes out ---air in oil line cant keep oil sending unit switch, turned off--In the mean time my bike is wearing out the rings and cyclinders ..These motors lube by splash but they have a scavenger and oil pump to circulate the oil--My theory is lucas and prolong airated causing the death of my Indian----Bob can u help me out by running a experament on your machine to see if my hypothosis is correct an save a lot of dead motorcycles in the process. What does any one else think --------Terry
