This post is a responce to Bob the oil guys experament with oil addatives---I have a 01 Indian scout, 88 ci s&s evolution engine ( like the Harley's) 14K total mi. It ran beautifull--I have only put 750 miles on it since I bought it----On its 1st oil change by me , about 500 mi.ago, I went to pep boys and bought lucas 20-50 full synthetic and put it in----A week or 2 later I added PROLONG in the proportion as used in autos. There after, When I would get my bike up to speed around 3000 rpm, the oil light would blink every so often --What the H--- is going on, cant find any reason . I tried 2 leave town on hwy 99 @ 70 mph and when the bike was good and warmed up,the
light started to blink and would only shut off at 20-30 mph ,Oil pressure on these engines run 6-10 lbs. When I got it in to the shop I checked the wire and oil sending unit--"all OK".. A guage check showed 1/2 lbs at idle and 1 lbs at 2500rpm..Checked oil in oil bag and it appeared to have changed color ( airated????)
The drained oil showed metalflake an bits of metal in the drain pan --All while the bike seemed to run good--I pulled the motor and found wiped ringes and exhaust valve guides--What happened --We couldnt find reason for no oil pressure--- I thought some one may of sabatoged my bike ---Then I thought maybe contamination at Lucas plant-- I typed on the net, LUCAS OIL CONTAMINATION an up came oil guys site with the lucas experament.NOW it seems to me that lucas oil and prolong probley airated the oil to such a extent that the oil light could not stay shut off at higher rpms due to too much air in the system--as in air in brakes cant push the brakes out ---air in oil line cant keep oil sending unit switch, turned off--In the mean time my bike is wearing out the rings and cyclinders ..These motors lube by splash but they have a scavenger and oil pump to circulate the oil--My theory is lucas and prolong airated causing the death of my Indian----Bob can u help me out by running a experament on your machine to see if my hypothosis is correct an save a lot of dead motorcycles in the process. What does any one else think --------Terry

Bob still posts here sometimes, and I don't think he's posted for awhile. (He is no longer the site owner). Never the less, it could have been aeration (foaming) or more likely a combination of just the worst wear protection, the oil not flowing to the oil pump and foam. It's pretty wild that you would put that garbage in your valuable bike. Expensive lesson.

The theme here is to pick a good oil up front. If your engine has mechanical issues, deal with them. If you know your engine is dirty, clean with Auto-rx or Cycle-rx (not an Amsoil product).

Just start reading through the threads....

Prolong is chlorinated paraffins, which is NOT good in an engine.

You learned an expensive lesson. Just put oil in your Indian and nothing else.

Be thankful that your Indian has an S&S engine which is (relatively) inexpensive to replace or rebuild. I feel sorry for the owners of later Indians that have the PowerPlus engines since it's not known if the new Indian company is going to make replacement parts for those engines or not. (Even though they are resurrecting the PowerPlus it's not known if the "new" PowerPlus will be different enough that parts won't be interchangeable with the old engines.)

Why would you put PROLONG in a MC engine when there are so many good MC rated oils to choose from readily available one the market?

Read your owners manual no oil additives,It was your fault so automatically you blame Lucas. When i was kid , you more knowledgable oil people can shed light on this.I forget the oil companys name they boasted their product contained grafite. My genius ungle thought he coild brew his own by putting grafite in in regular oil.Needles to say that beautiful 74 coupe devilles 472 engine sounded like a thrashing machine.

I have used Lcas oil my flh never had a problem.reason i dont use lucas anymore, there is better oil out there at lower cost.
