De-Icers. Do they work?

I saw two different Prestone products the other day at autozone, both from Prestone.

One was a pre-icer, which you put on the night before, so that ice won't stick, and the other was a more common de-icer which you put on after the storm.

do these things work?

yesssssssssssssss they do.

in Tennessee, when we (rarly) get ice or really cold temps, tat stuff is GREAT of you keep your car/truck outside overnight.

Those things are silly if you get serious snow.

When I was younger, I would cut a large cardboard box to the size of the windshield, then use the wipers to hold it on during the night.

That worked OK sometimes.

Now that I am slightly less ghetto, I see that walmart has a little cover that you can put over the windshield, that straps to the side mirrors to prevent it from blowing away.

This is a 5 dollar item, I might try one of those.

Yeah it doesn't work for snow but the standard Prestone de-icer works very well on frost.

I used it this morning. I sprayed it on and ran the wipers. Frost gone.

I haven't tried the "pre-icer".

Run the Prestone stuff in the windshield washer every winter up here in the frozen north and it works pretty good on frosty windows, and even helps loosen ice, though it won't do much on heavy ice accumulation. It also helps to keep the windshield washer fluid lines from freezing up better than regular fluid. I didn't find the RainX winter stuff as good--a bit less ice clearing capability.
