Back around 1972 or 1973, government tried DST year round. Mother’s with small children HATED it because it forced their children to go to school IN THE DARK. Nobody liked it in the winter and the only people who liked it in summer were golfers.
I also hate DST. The only smart people who understand Standard Time in this country are those in Arizona and to a lesser account, Hawaii. They run it year round and understand it.
Unlike my illustrious Senator (Rubio) from Florida, I believe we should have STANDARD TIME year round. (Let the Sun tell us the time - within 7 and a half degrees of Earth Rotation - Each Earth time zone is 15 Degrees). Because my Florida home is slightly off from the center of my time zone, my noon by the sun comes at 12:35pm EST,
1:35 EDT. When we use DST, we are “borrowing” the time zone of the zone East of us. Example:
EST is in the -5 “Romeo” time zone. EDT uses the time from the next Eastern zone, in this case -4 (Quebec) Atlantic Standard time. (AST) This is why in the winter, California uses PST -8 (Uniform) time and Arizona uses MST -7 (Tango) time but in summer
California goes to PDT which is the same as MST, the same time Arizona uses.
I know this post is LONG and I could go on and on about time zones East and West of Greenwich GMT, Zulu time) but I’ve posted enough. I understand why most people don’t understand it
Trust me, keep Standard Time year round, Nationwide.
You don't think the vast majority of people would rather have an extra hour of light in the evening compared to at 5-6 am?

I actually thought about that yesterday.
For me it's about how much time I have between arriving at home, and when it gets dark. I leave work at 3:30, so after a 45 minute commute, its a race to get anything done outside. 2 days ago I could get stuff done after work. Now I need a set of floodlights, or wait for the weekend. I'd prefer they just leave it sprung ahead.

Interestingly enough, my boss says that her dogs adjust their times when the clocks are changed. She's thinking that's because she has one of those singing bird wall clocks and the dogs know that when they hear a certain bird call it's walk or food time.

It was 1973 that Congress put a two year term on remaining on DST year round. That was a response to the first OPEC oil embargo. Crude went from $3.00 a barrel to $11.65. It later appeared that not much energy was conserved.
Personally, I have always favored going to year-round DST. The old argument that "the kids will have to go to school in the dark", can be easily fixed by starting all schools an hour later. That may also be a big help with the "latch key kids" scenario. That is, students currently arriving home long before a parent does.
