She has my '91 240 up at school. Guy with a jacked up P/U ran into her while she was at a stop sign in the apartment complex parking lot!

No pics from her yet...I am going to drive the 75 miles tomorrow am to see the car.

She says the only broken part she can find is the DS turn signal lens. She says the hood and fender above the headlight and TS are crinkled back a bit...maybe a 4 inch section of the hood and the small bit of the fender above the TS lens.

I have priced grill, HL assy, TS assy just in case.

Other driver wants to settle for cash. This is a pretty nice old 240 with pretty low miles...I hate to rat it out by not doing the body work.

I have no idea what a smallish repair like this might cost.

Anybody want to swag?

If I think the guy is being fair, I don't mind not going through insurance....but I sure don't want to give the guy a freebie...he almost hurt my daughter, he did really upset her, and is going to screw up my Saturday!

Take it to a body shop asap and get a quote if you want to go that route, you really should just report it to insurance, it is the law.

Bummer.
My rule of thumb is $1000 per square foot of body damage.

Get a quote from a good/reputable body shop in that area to see if the guy who hit your daughter's car will pay for it in full. If he does, then do not need to report to insurance. Even the accident is other driver fault 100%, it is still in her insurance record as involved in an accident. Several of these no-fault accidents will make insurance nervous and drop her.

+1

Aw man! That poor 240 :^( Keep it legal. Go through insurance. Don`t let this ds get off that easy.

Always, always, always go through insurance. This guy will tell you he won't pay until the car is fixed, then when the time comes, you won't be able to find him. He hit her. What do you care about what this is going to do to his insurance rates.

BTW, your daughter did get his insurance information, right?

The guy is *not* being fair. Since he is at fault, he's worried his rates will go up. That should not be your concern.

I do have one question. Did she involve the police? Smart move to do so.

Been through it myself, let the other driver pay cash and got took down the tubes. Turn it in to the insurance agency, isn't that why you pay for insurance?

I'm all for giving the guy a break, but you need to have a contignency in case the body shop finds hidden damage once they start the repair. If this guy just gives you a check for the estimate, you might have a hard time collecting any supplemental reimbursement.

My wife recently had a guy in a furniture van tap the rear bumper. I happened to be in front of her in traffic so I pulled over as well. The driver was thoughtful, courteous and respectful. Called his boss and he aslo had the right attitude. He wanted to avoid insurance and I agreed. The damage was all cosmetic, but if I had any concerns about hidden damage I would have had him sign an agreement stating he would be responsible for it.

Everything worked out just fine and we didn't make the parasitic insurance company any richer with increased premiums. It's nice when people can work things out honorable, between themselves instead of involving the police/insurance companies for every little thing.

Good luck and I hope the damage is minor.

I was unclear if the accident was on private roads or not...if the parking lot is not a city street, then it's probably not illegal to not involve insurance, or the law.

For sure get a hard quote and use insurance (rates will go up) as your "bad cop".

if it's a parking lot, the police in Memphis won't do a police report. it's private property and not city roads.

Wife got into a bumper basher with, as it turns out, a terrible driver-- three accidents in two years. Was texting.

The bill was cheap, $1200 or so, but we still put it through the idiot's insurance company, hoping that his rates would go up again.

Talking to their adjuster though, the adjuster said idiot was willing to pay me directly. I told them I preferred going through insurance, but he and his insured could settle up. IDK if they CAN, to avoid another black mark, but it intrigued me the adjuster even brought this up to me.

I would suspect the volvo to survive/ rebuild fairly well, having thicker gauge metal in fenders, and a possibly more modular approach to building things (even though they're still unibodies.) You rarely see an old volvo with little nicks and dings.

Go through the insurance!
Just think what would happen if you (privately) go through the bodyshop and the guy decides not to pay up, or wants to Dicker about the repair cost!

That doesn't surprise me. I hit a deer back in 06. First, the adjuster wanted me to take it to a shop of his choice. I wouldn't do it. Then the shop called me to tell me they were being held up because he wanted them to use Japanese body parts. (I had a rider that specified BMW OEM parts only.)

Then, to top it all off, he called and complained about how much a new hood cost. AND, to complain how he had to authorize an extension of the loaner.

He got fired.
