so the left side of my gauges are dimmer sometimes. its on my 98 sl2.if i tap the dash then its fine. could it just be the bulbs? anyone know how to disassemble it correctly?
You've got those bayonet twisty base bulbs/ bulb holders that have little prongs that meet the circuit board. Just have some oxidation there; twist and reseat the bugger and you're GTG.
Of course as long as you have it out you could run a pencil eraser or similar on it for some more mechanical abrasion.
It's the "orchestra" bulbs, they are common to go bad on the S-series. Go to the wreckers and gut a few clusters, you'll be sure to get at least a few good ones. Replacement is easy, you can replace just by removing the dash pad, the bulbs are right on top.
you cannot replace the bulbs unless you remove dash pad and then the front dash molding. kinda a pain for something so simple. anyway i took it apart cleaned everything and it seems to be working... i notice one of the tabs was cracked so its been apart before.

You can replace those upper bulbs without removing the cluster, but it's not hard to remove even if you have to.
And yes, bulbs might be available at parts store but they're free from the wreckers (they would never charge for those)
