The kids, my wife, and myself all attended the OPG open house at the Darlington Energy Complex today which was intended to give people a better understand of not only the operations of Darlington but also what is involved in the CANDU refurbishment process, of which we are >60% complete of unit 2 at Darlington.

A little background: Darlington is the newest, and most expensive, of our three Nuclear Power Plants in Ontario. Its 4 reactors produce 3,512MW, making it the 2nd most powerful site behind the 8-unit Bruce facility, which, at 6,384MW and 49TWh of annual generation, represents 30% of Ontario's generating capacity. Darlington, like Pickering and Bruce, was designed to be an 8-unit site. Unfortunately, because it went significantly over budget, its B site was never built. That may change in the near future however.

Currently, the plant for Darlington B is either the current CANDU 6 design, which would result in the site likely ending up at 7,024MW, or the AP1000, which, if four were built, would increase the site's output to 7,980MW. Both would have Darlington usurping Bruce as the world's most powerful operating nuclear power plant.

The Energy Complex has a complete mock-up of one of the units inside Darlington, which is used for training purposes and ensuring the refurbishment is completed quickly, on budget and in the safest way possible.

The Open House included the opportunity to interact with various industry professionals from Rolls-Royce, BWXT, AECON...etc. You also got to meet and interact with the Security and Fire services, both of which are exclusive to the facility. I had a great chat with a gentleman from Rolls-Royce about SMR's and waste reprocessing as well as Darlington B with a Technical Manager who used to work for Bruce but now works at OPG.

And some pics!

Thanks for posting! I've always wanted to visit a large generation plant. I'd love to see the big turbines. Did you get a chance to see those by any chance?

Unfortunately no, the turbines aren't part of the mock-up, but I've posted some pics of the Darlington turbines in a previous thread.

The facility (not the mock-up) is well secured, though it is less intense than at Bruce which is super heavy on security; more than at Andrews Airforce Base. You can see the double layers of fence with the razor wire between them. There is a 5ft proximity sensor before the fence and patrol vehicles as well as tons of cameras.

Yup, their environmental assessment is still valid and they are not going to let it lapse. I was told today it is "shovel ready", they just need the go-ahead from the government. I believe the expectation is that the new administration, which is very nuclear-friendly, is going to let the project proceed.

We wore head and waist packs (dosimetry) and were in full coms with rad protection. We used a large torque wrench with a specially designed end on it and torqued the closure plugs to set amount on the ones that wouldn't torque properly or fully with the fueling machine.

On top of this, and while getting bombarded with radiation and trying not to get wetted, we were also in a full body harness (under our suit next to our bodies/rad clothing) tied off to a lifeline as we worked off a platform that would be raised and lowered by another person (operator) who was also in coms with us.

Not all closure plugs would torque/seal properly so we attached "shower caps" on them and attached a hose to those that were long enough to go below the 100 elevation (ground floor) into the fueling duct. This was all done to help keep Tritium levels to a reasonable level during the outage.

Glad you enjoyed yourself today, Overkill. I seen the buses entering the site but to be honest, I had forgotten about open house today.

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

The conversation is off to a faltering start here in Oz at the current time, but it's one that needs to be had, when the alternatives are more expensive, and less reliable.

I say it's about time.

Yeah, OPG is counting on it. Darlington B has been "ready to go" for a while. The folks at OPG seem pretty excited about Ford potentially pulling the trigger and letting it get built.

Thanks for the info Irv!

My buddy who has been working there was supposed to give me a bit of a tour today, but unfortunately he ended up at Pickering so we had to go it alone. Still was an amazing time.

Was your buddy going to take you in the protected area? Lots to have in place before that would be able to happen so I assume not?

Speaking of Ford and DNGS-B, in a new Nuclear Neighbors flyer I received yesterday, there is a write up about it "OPG Submits Status Report on New Nuclear Site Preparation Licence" It reads, OPG has submitted a mid-term status report to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) on Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) site preparation licence, which was granted by the CNSC in 2012. There is more but it also reads, "To read a copy of the report, visit opg.com

It sounds like things just might be moving forward and in the right direction for a change!

Wow, that's a lot of power. Work continues on the Site C Hydroelectric Priject near Fort St. John in B.C. It will have a peak power of 1100 MW, an average of 680 MW and should produce 5.1 GWhrs per year, small change to the nuclear plants. Thanks for the posting.

Not today, but he is trying to arrange that as well. I've got a reasonably high level of clearance due to some of the facilities I've worked in so it shouldn't be difficult to orchestrate.

That's awesome!

But you haven't dealt with the DNGS access process before!
crackmeup2.gif

Is your buddy an OPG employee or a contractor?

Hopefully you get the chance to enter sometime as I am sure you will enjoy it, especially looking over the turbine hall floor on the 131 elevation.
Whatever you do, ensure you are with your sponsor at all times and don't take in any food or food products, including gum, mints, etc. They take that seriously, rightfully so, but it will be the last time you ever enter DNGS, guaranteed if they find those things in your possession. Your buddy/sponsor will also have [censored] to pay!

Situations/incidents like that have all made it more difficult for individuals like yourself to get access. They frown on it mostly now and if your visit isn't of much importance, they usually squash the request.

Good luck.

Nuclear power is very safe if done correctly.
