Doing an oil change on a buddy's 08' Ranger (4.0 SOHC) and hes reported some valve rattle and some startup noise with "whatever midas is putting in"
he wants to stay with 5w30 but doesn't know much about oil.
took a look inside his valve cover, hes got some varnish (At ~130k miles) but nothing awful. Whats a good "Thick 30" that might help with the rattle he's hearing.
I was also thinking about throwing some Motorcraft in there or maybe PP to help with the varnish.
Any ideas on a "thick" 30?

Don't touch it. If anything else crops up, it'll be your fault.

I quit volunteering to help people with their vehicles a long time ago.

Bingo. No good deed goes unpunished.

MIdas probably put in 0w20.

Startup rattle could be the filter so try switching away from whatever is in there. For dino, I'd try regular old VWB for a couple of changes and see how it does. That begs the question though, what are his driving habits?

As far as being blamed for doing something, it's certainly possible; but if you let him do his own work (pointing out the value of DIY and how much he will save over time) then it's on him.

Those engines will rattle until oil pressure makes it to the chain tensioner on the left bank. the colder it is ouside the more they rattle. Best oil I've found for that engine is GC

Put in a good HM oil in 5-30 configuration. They are part synthetic and tend to be a little thicker.I have never been an HM oil fan, but i am beginning to believe in them for their intended use. BTW the Motorcraft filter will do nicely.

And try to open his eyes to the fact (assuming owner's manual specs 5w30) there's no harm in moving up a weight to 10w30 if he thinks the engine's getting a little loose. OEM filters are never a bad thing but may not have any effect. I'd go to a HM conventional or syn blend and see what happens. I'm predisposed to help people, too, but if he's willing to ruin the engine before listening to reasonable solutions outside the owner's manual then you have to let him create his own evidence to make it pbvious he needs to lighten up a little.

Buddy o' mine brought over some 5w30 conventional Pennz to put in his DD '89 Ford van with a 300-6 that doesn't have any oil pressure to spare - he said he "couldn't remember and just asked the guy at the counter what factory viscosity was" but my opinion was he's nuts for putting that in it when he knows its getting tired and suspects he hears rod noise already (between 150-180K), but telling him that would've only ticked him off at me and he'd have still had me put in the 5w30 or done it himself, so I didn't say anything. (He's opposed to Valvoline partly because he got the idea somewhere it's got "too much wax in it") A couple months later he let me change it myself before I borrowed the van and took it on a trip - drained about 2.5 qts. out of that big six (yikes) and put in Maxlife 10w40 w/Motorcraft filter. No miraculous improvement, but it didn't fall apart and maybe he'll observe it does alright on the Maxlife and come around to it eventually. Just an anecdote to say, I feel ya.

Motorcraft filter with Motorcraft oil in what ever weight the manual specs. No way to blame anyone for anything if you use Ford stuff in Ford's specs. Its good and affordable.

I'll bet midas used the wrong stuff.

+1

My friend had a 2001 Ford Ranger with the 4.0 SOHC. Sold it at 200k running strong. We used Motorcraft filters and Motorcraft 5w30 or PYB 5w30. I'd also bet Midas is putting in 5w20.

A thinner oil will actually make less start up noise than a 5W30 or 10W30. A 5W20 is not recommended for that engine, that engine has 4 timing chains and will shear oil fast. any filter will work. I use FL1A's but no reason to do that.

Kendall High Mileage 5w30 and a Fram Ultra filter almost stopped the chain rattle
in my 2001 Sport Trac completely.

Fram mid-grade Tough Guard filter with silicone red ADBV and Pennzoil or Quaker State conventional oil. Change oil at 3K and filter at 6K, until varnish diminishes or disappears.

The geographical location of where the engine was built or the oil blended has nothing to do with it.

My Ranger is older('99) but I have been using M1 0/40 for the last 9 or 10 years and my 4.0 loves it. Doesn't use enough oil(down around 1/2 qt.) to have to add any on my 10k mile oil run's. Great uoa's.
