damage running a super small oil filter?

The oil filter requirement changed for the the 1999 Mercury Villager 3.3L
engine. To confirm, the 1999 Mercury Villager
3.3L engine uses the PH7317 with the 20mm x 1.5mm thread. The 1998 Mercury
Villager 3.0L engine uses the PH3682 with
the 3/4"-16 thread.

The PH7317 and PH3682 are not interchangeable. This change in filter thread
size and design reflects the Ford
engineering requirements. Fram simply followed suit by offering the appropriate
aftermarket equivalent filters.

so i had the right filter all along. but i dont know what filter my uncle put on there so i have no idea if the threads are messed up unless i take it down. the super small filter was actually the right filter....

Auuurghhhhh! I slipped on the numbers and can't get up! Drifter do the 7317 and the 3593A have the same exit port diameter and thread pitch? What kind of car are you putting these on? If the thread diameter and pitch are the same, the WIX equivalent of the 3593A is their 51334. It has an 8-11 psi bypass pressure. But, now it gets interesting if you're interested in a LARGE (relatively) filter for that application. WIX lists a catalog number 51626 that is equivalent to the fram number 3985. This bad boy is fully as large as the Ford and Chrysler PH16 that was a "shorty" version of the old PH8/FL1. (Not saying these are all equivalent filters - just giving you an idea of their physical size.) The bypass pressure of the 51626 is also listed as 8-11 psi. These list a 20mm thread diameter and a 1.5 threads per inch pitch just as the 3593A/51335 filters do. The qualifying factor will be whether there's enough physical clearence to fit in your application. In terms of media area, WIX lists 3.1" x 3.2" for the 51334 (3593A equivalent) vs. 3.8" x 3.6" for the 51626 (3985 equivalent) - a 38% increase in media area. These would've worked great on my '96 I4 Accord, but there was no way their girth would've permitted wiggling them through nearby exhaust and suspension pieces to the firewall side engine block oil filter mount. But they fit just dandy in the available space for the front oil filter mount on my '03 Sonata V6.

hehe the 7317 does have the 20x1.5mm thread pattern as the 3593a.

Ford engineering requirements???? Hahaha , Nissan was switching all their 3/4-16 oil filter mounts to the 20mmx1.5 metric over the years as engines were updated. The Nissan small filters, for most new Nissans, #'s 7317 and 6607 are correct. So, lucky for you, there was NO damage to running a small filter.

What is the year/make/model/engine of your application and where did you get info concerning correct/incorrect oil filter part numbers?
Standard threaded Nissans don't have bypass in filter. Metric threaded Nissans have the filter bypass.

the car that i assumed had the wrong oil filter was a mercury villager 99. i got my sources from fram who did most of my reasearch for me, they thought i used their products..heck no i was just using them.

as for the wrong filter, im not sure if the threads are damaged, i dont think so...i wonder if it is, now i got an extra part lying around here that costed me 60 bucks.

my 1986 300zx usees the ph3682.

i tend to get 1999 confused with 1998...stupid. i wonder if my uncle did put the right filter though, gosh. now i have an extra part thati cant return.
