Thank you for the reply and the clarification.
The oil filter requirement changed for the the 1999 Mercury Villager 3.3L
engine. To confirm, the 1999 Mercury Villager
3.3L engine uses the PH7317 with the 20mm x 1.5mm thread. The 1998 Mercury
Villager 3.0L engine uses the PH3682 with
the 3/4"-16 thread.
The PH7317 and PH3682 are not interchangeable. This change in filter thread
size and design reflects the Ford
engineering requirements. Fram simply followed suit by offering the appropriate
aftermarket equivalent filters.

so i had the right filter all along. but i dont know what filter my uncle put on there so i have no idea if the threads are messed up unless i take it down. the super small filter was actually the right filter....
