I run into this a lot with most people I talk too. When I explain how like over 30 degrees they're all the same they just look confused.
True. They seem to believe the "0" somehow shows how thin it can be, and the "40" shows how thick it can be---which is kinda opposite of reality.

Ooohhh, I know, Get him some Green Kendal GT1. He'll love that stuff. Think it's better than any Lucas oil

Wal*Mart 15W40 CJ-4. A 5 gallon pail would be enough for the cam break-in and drain after 100 miles, and a couple of oil changes after that. Good to -20C, what ever that is in Fahrenheit.

So dad calls you with an oil question about a motor you rebuilt for him, but then does not want to listen to your recommendation?

Just tell him what you think he should use for how it was built, and if he wants to use something else, then he can. If he has issues because of it, it is on him.
I would ask him why he called you to ask for your advice if he does not want your advice.

That's basically what brother and I told him. Use a 0w40, not a gosh awful thick 15w40. Brother said "I bought you half the engine parts, so listen for once!"

I told brother let him run whatever race oil he chooses. He will never drag race the thing anyways

These numbers are of course based on somewhat arbitrary endpoints. A typical 0W-40 is going to be thicker than a typical 5W-20 at summer ambient temperatures.

Well, dad called me and said he found some Castrol 5w50 quarts at his Autozone $2/quart so he nabbed 14 of them

And he got 2 "made in Germany" 0w40 jugs at $9/5quart jug
