In my family, most of the generation above mine were active in WW-II, but none directly in the beach landings:

Thank you to all the WW-II vets. We owe them our freedom, and also to many that followed.

I think every last WW-II vet in my family has since died of various natural causes. It's still a special day for me though.

That's the only instant graemlins we have. No Union Jack etc. available.

Not to minimize anyone's contribution, but all who speak English won the day.

Dictators don't seem to realize that if you harm one of us unjustly, you may face us all.

And since we are independent, we can bring different, unique technologies to bear and we do cooperate.

I feel that June 6, 1944, is one of the most important days in world history. Just think what would have happened if the invasion would have been stopped at the beach and Hitler ordered the Panzers(sp) to attack. I, too, thank everyone that has worn a uniform for my freedom.

I wonder, of those who hit the beach in the first 15 minutes, what proportion lived to see the end of the war.

It must have been brutal.

My Dad was there. He was also in North Africa. And my uncle was on the aircraft carrier Lexington.

I heard something somewhere that 6000-8000 allied troops went down in a single day at D-Day. But I don't know if that includes just the American forces or all allied forces.

-Warm up the nukes.

The cold + hard reality is that I might not be driving an Audi if such an instance had come to pass.

Never would happen. Actually our conventional bombing was more devastating although not as great a phychological impact.

Hitler didn't understand that a modern army needs close air support. Lacking that, they had no real chance.

Japan was a whole different scenario.

d-day was successful largely in part because the german high command was looking for "the real" invasion farther north as their spies had led them to believe. An earlier unsuccessful Bristish invasion at Diepp (sp?) confirmed and consumed their conventional wisdom that the attack would be directed at a fortified area.

A series of decoy "invasions" (radio chatter, etc) in those expected locations reinforced the notion and prevented them from re-deploying to the Normandy area in a timely manner. They were convinced that the normady beach was a decoy.

Its special to me too. My grandpa who passed recently was a weatherman with the Army Air Forces who got to present weather to to high brass on a few occasions including this area and time. He never really talked much about war though directly with us.
