Inspection at oil change and they say I have torn boot??
Really??? They recommended axel be replaced !! 😂😂😂😂
I call BS
This looks like typical grease being thrown off at the clamp. Maybe excess??

My thinking is generally w Trav: if the grease thins excessively, you can get weeping.

I recently reco'd a Taco replacement boot for this reason, but you could also see the boot was showing its ageView attachment 319539
Your boot was pretty much done. The OP Pic is pretty low resolution but boot looks good. I replaced our CRV inner boot clamp going on 3 years ago. Quit leaking and no noise or other signs of failure. No point in replacing good parts with today's questionable replacements. Of course replacing just the boot and grease is the ultimate repair but good luck finding someone to do that. Everyone just swaps axles now.

Reboot if you can as the factory axle is of high quality. Shops don't want to deal with the fuss of rebooting so they do (crappy aftermarket) axle slaps and send it. The "lifetime warranty" is typically useless too; for example, warranty is denied if the boot is damaged/ripped.

Thanks for all replies.
I’m going to monitor it, since car has only 42K miles and it’s a Hyundai (high quality).

Through the shop? I've warrantied at least a half dozen shafts through O'Reilly and RA for torn boots, and even warrantied just a BeckArnley boot based on principle (lasted 8 months)

Never a word about a failed boot voiding warranty.

I was told it was new language in the warranty. Napa harassed me about it a couple months ago. I've been exchanging them for 15 years on my truck every time the boot splits. The parts person said bring them back to exchange before it splits next time. Whatever that means

As of 12/2022:

"The warranty is void if the boot is damaged in any way."

So when the cracking gets bad, hurry and swap it. Such an odd clause. CV axles fail when the boot is damaged and grease leaks out or they fail dramatically and damage the boot. The only issue I've had with them when the boot is perfectly intact is when they did such a bad job of manufacturing that they vibrate immediately when installed

If the cracking gets bad, that is probably enough to be considered boot damage. I'd probably swap it at the first sign of cracks. ;)

Shockingly, all of the Trakmotive axles I have installed in the last 1-2 years have performed beautifully with zero issues. I'm still shocked.

I found another post with same car and same problem! Someone pointed out that INBOARD joint leaks (like mine) aren’t as critical, due to less overall stress on them.

The quality of boots these days, that's going to be a lot of changing.

Not sure if you’ve used any of the PDL brand axles from worldpac but also no issues on any so far. Obviously I want Genuine axles or GKN (which we’ve started to see premature boot failures), but not always in the cards.
