I had these older PL10241 pictures that were used on Toyota 3.0L V6. These show wide pleat spacing and have deteriorating pleats near glue. I have five of six with issues next to the seam where the media has fibers separating near the glue, yet not full tear, see last picture. Note the oldest filter, with the string around the media, had much better spacing and no problem pleats.

Any idea why flickr image links do not work?

images do not work.

As far as pleat spacing goes, it will affect the durability of pleats in many different filters.

I recently installed an STP S16 on my Cherokee. Being an e-core design, pleat spacing is very important. At the same time, pleat spacing is far more visible due to the wide open nylon center cage. I was able to verify proper pleat spacing prior to purchase, and therefore have complete confidence in the filter I am running.

I love the way my XJ runs with the STP filters. I genuinely believe that the wide open center cage improves oil flow.
