Once I finish up my Bosch stash, this is the one going on the Ranger. The little bit of extra length makes them easier to grab and remove as opposed to the 910S ones.

Looks fine to me. It seems Motorcraft going to dome bypass on this application, been several posts about it this subforum. Read some scuttlebutt other MC applications will follow suit. Can't speak to reliability of that rumor. This one made in 2019 so still thread end bypass. Fwiw, if Motorcraft does go to dome bypass, not a big deal imo.

Another example, excepting 820S, generally speaking Motorcraft post use anecdotes have looked good.

Thanks for c&p.

So what is it about the 820S?
How does one filter of a respected product line end up with cheaper construction?
My Ranger (4.0l SOHC) takes the 820S. I use WIX or FU (Fram Ultra).

While there is no metal crimped seem I really don't mind a glued seem as long as it's a good job/seal.

I have 3 Fords that take the 820S and I don't hesitate to use them. 2 of them have 150K+ on them

That's fine. My "serious question" is about the singling out of one filter.
How can that happen (repeated bad 820S as evidenced by C&Ps here) if not by design?
Design and manufacturing quality are two separate things. You can have a perfect design, but if that design can't be made to specs then it can become garbage. The filters that tear media have big wide pleat spacing, so if filter model A is made on one manufacturing line, and filter model B made on another line, it's possible that one line makes the filters with crummy pleat spacing while the other makes filters with perfect pleat spacing. That's a manufacturing QA issue, because the "design" goal is to make them with good pleat spacing.
