finally got in my baldwin order. I had gotten an email back from baldwin about the difference, but I wanted to get one of each to cut open anyway.

both of the filters are for the same app. the BT261 is the "Standard" version and B299 is the "High performance" version.

What does baldwin say the difference is? media grade. Here is the screen shot I received:

its a little hard to read so I'll type out the good part.

Code:
B299...BT261

Media Grade: L26-75M...L70-45

Media Area sq. in.: 682...487

Holding Capacity grams: 48...46

Estab. Micron Rating: 12...23

Beta Ratio 2/75: 12/25...23/45

Avg. Efficiency: 89.4%...75.98%

I think I'll be reaching for the B299 since it is only a dollar more. Enjoy the pics.

the BT261 had a nice little gasket to seal the other side. I thought that was a nice touch:

Here it is as if it were assembled:

These filters have a stand pipe. not sure why, maybe because they are mounted vertically, thread end down?:

The b299's stand pipe was removable:

just had a thought that made me LOL.

The gasket on the BT261 is a nice touch that might prevent leakage. But with a beta ratio of 50% @ 23 and 98.7% @ 45 unfiltered oil getting past it is the least of my worries.

Baldwins are quality built filters but for the life of me i don't understand why there efficiency's are so poor. Some FG are that way too.

I know right thats what put me on the hunt for something better.

FG makes a syn and stratapore but they are almost $30 per filter and I have to order a case worth. not sure what the FG specs are.

Wix #51784 beta is 2/20=20/44, 24 nominal.

Donaldson is not any better. Not sure what OEM is.

so I was trying to find something better, but also would not break the bank. I did score 2 new syn FGs (LF3559) on ebay for 15 shipped. but I need a better supply than lucky hits on ebay.

It appears to be Case and IH. I'm assuming that flow in a dusty environment where the oil could get easily contaminated is the priority, rather than filtration efficiency.

I suspect that Baldwin has a reason for such low specs on this filter. They're not all like this.

Now who in there right mine would want that for there expensive diesel engine?, not us.

Agreed. However, I don't know what models and model years these filters would have been specified for. IH wasn't a standalone brand since the mid 1980s, if I recall correctly. If it was specified for a combine, I can see their point. Daily air filter cleaning was the norm, so I would assume a lot of dust made it into the engine, and oil and filter changes would have been done once a year, or less frequently. A lot of combines in the day used gasoline engines, too, but again, I'm not sure what engines this filter is specified for.

Nice find! I'm gonna have to look closer at the specs...

yeah this is for a IH hydro 70 with D312 diesel engine. it uses two of these oil filters. this tractor was bought new in the early 1970's I'm not sure how long this model was in production.
