I know what it's like, but it's best to keep cool "sorry Bud, can't help you today" if he persists, suggest another company, tell him you have heard they are real good and should be able to help. Even if they are 30 miles away. :-)
Be nice, even, or especially, if they rant, but don't back down!

Slightly OT. My boss was gone one day and I was working alone. Was helping a customer, had another in line when a guy came running in the door and threw a leaky heater core on my paper work and demamded that I fix it right there and now.

I moved the heater onto a table and continued to help the original customer who was as shocked as I was.

Guy grabbed the heater and threw it back on my now wet paper work.

I excused my self. Walked over to the nuisance, picked him up under his arms and walked him out the door.

His heater followed.

But you didn't tell them that then you fixed my heater core!

He's a narcissist. He's in love with himself and thinks the world revolves around him.

This is about the way you want to handle it. Typically we tell them we will get to them as soon as we can. We appreciate their business, but please be patient, as we have a few orders ahead of theirs and will get to it as soon as we can.If that does not work, they have made the decision for you.

The more you give, the more they take.

Getting things repaired is not like ordering a Big Mac. It always cost way more, and it always takes way more time......

I think it comes down to unless you have worked on cars it is hard to empathize...... Or they just forgot.

as a Customer i have found that treating the mech right, saves me money in the long run. after he is just trying earn a living, dont ask him to give that a way.

Some people dont get it.My company charges 140$ just for me to show up. Just the first 1/2 hr. Then it is 38 for every 15 minutes. One lady was starting to go off because I was taking too long trying to sort out the 6 window contacts the carpenters just tossed into a box when they replaced the windows. I just stood there doing nothing except planning to how string the job out.

I had a similar experience the other day. We had a 645ci come in, nice guy jokes around, wannabe Mobster type guy. Talking to us the whole time, in the shop, watching us swap his tires over to some [censored] Chinese rims he bought. (275/35/19 runflats btw) No one was a problem with his aux fan, which we ended up diagnosing as a faulty HVAC unit. Programming and installation is around 1800. He freaks, complains about what a POS it is and declines the repair. Picks it up, then comes back the next morning yelling at us that we didnt look the car over like we said we did, we did this wrong, that wrong. 9 am on a Saturday. I said John whats the matter?" "Oh let me show you" Goes to the back of the car and pops the trunk. "Look I gotta lift this thing open now! It used to pop open all the time on its own but now it only goes up halfway and I gotta lift it! What did you do to my car!" Yelling as he lifts his trunk open. I reply, "John, you brought your car in for a repair that quotes 1800, I honestly didnt think youd want 125 dollar trunk struts. If you want we can order them, and Ill install later today wehn theyre delivered" "Oh you'd love that, just rip me off more!" So he hops in his car, and tries to burnout in our lot pulling back onto the main street in front of the shop. But forgets to turn traction control off, which freaks out and cuts the power right in the middle of the street. Stopping traffic with one finger raised, I think we saw John for the last time.
Wow, I feel alot better.
