Filled up the ute with Diesel today, usual station, as I get 4c/l off in reward points, as well as them being the cheapest diesel on town.

Not for the first time, had diesel running out of the pump onto my hand.

Went in to pay, and told them that the pump handle was still leaking.

Woman (part owner) "It's not leaking, people keep saying it's leaking, but it's not. We get it tested by Caltex, and they say it's not leaking. We get a lot of trucks in, and they somehow get it backed up into the handle, and the next user complains that it's leaking when it's not".

Me "Well I still ended up with my hands covered in diesel"

Her "well take it up with the truck drivers".

Anyone know how it's possible to end up with a handle full of diesel by filling a truck ?

I'll add that there are 4 diesel pumps at the station, and the one that "leaks" is the only one that's accessible to large trucks.

Well now, you are just gonna have to use a different pump now ain't ya! Or when you pump use the cash you are going to pay with as a buffer between you and the oil. Sort of like buffer cash. Then when you pay say, "Hey thanks for getting that pump fixed!"

Even if that was the case she could have been nice about it and offered to clean the handle or inspect it every once and a while... I mean with all the gas stations out there, there is lots of competition.

Then when they go bankrupt they would blame the company for a bad location or something like my Franchisees blame us when they have bad customer service and go bankrupt.

diesel foams up. I suppose if the shutoff isnt proper, it could foam up and out of the tank.

Ive seen pumps that are pretty poor / stinky / oily... Dont know why. Often the station provides a work glove to wear!

+ a million... What a great way for them to get the message!

had the same issue with a normal petrol pump not shutting off - they didn't believe me a number of times (BP)

Normally pay by card.

It's annoying...can wash my hands before paying easy enough, but need to lock the fuel filler flap with the key, getting diesel all over that...stinks the car up (sorry oilyriser, it doesn't smell THAT good).

Might use the cash as a protector one day, it's a good idea. Only if I see the dragon lady at the checkout, and have sufficient readies on me at the time. Wouldn't do it to her staff.

I know some stations around here have a box of vinyl gloves sitting on top of a few pumps.

Perhaps ask and see if they have any.

I worked for a Shell oil and gas jobber that owned the stations or supplied fuel for about 90% of the state. If we had a customer complain about the handles leaking we had our people check it out as soon as possible and if it was leaking I made sure the cutomer knew that it had been repaired and we were sorry for the inconvience. I feel that now to many companys are letting employees get away with being rude and then throw their hands up and blame everyone else for their failure.

this lady is part owner.

I worked as a console operator back in 1987 at the biggest shell servo in my state. If a customer complained about delivered volume, my manager would ring the state's weights and measures people to come test the pump.

In a year, never saw one leaking 'though.

Use the car pumps, leave that other one to the trucks. At my old workshop which was on one corner of a service station site, there was a diesel pump on the island - but they also had another pump for trucks and buses on the far side of my shop....and it was a real pain when trucks or buses came in.The forecourt by the truck pump was sometimes just awash with diesel.

Trouble with buses and trucks with bodies is that they make the filler access very difficult.Sometimes they can't even get the handle more than a couple of inches down the filler neck, the auto shut off will never work like that. It's a given that there will be a spill in that case.Tour bus drivers always wore big gloves....they know what is going to happen.

From the way Shannow describes this woman, she'd probably want to charge him for each glove.

mission accomplished.

$100 in diesel soaked (well not soaked, plastic cash doesn't soak) handed over this arvo.

Well done.

FWIW I have a pair of riggers gloves jammed down beside the seat purely for fill time in the Defender.

any reaction from the old b...

It was funny...had a 20c off voucher. Pulled up in the BMW on the way home (it needs fuel), and saw that she was on...well standing next to her car, having a smoke.

Decided to go home and get the diesel, and implement the plan instead of fill the beemer.

Grabbed some cash on the way back down.

When I got to the desk, she asked me if I could lipread.

I said no, not really, and she said that she thought I must have, because I drove off when she was mouthing for me to go away, so she could finish her smoke.

Handed her the $100, got change and receipt...receipt was semi transparent due to the fuel on her hands.

Closest she came to noticing was rubbing and smelling her fingers before serving the next guy.

Maybe next time.
