Custom 76 Oil

i always see tens of cases of this stuff at the dollar store, they get huge shipments of it and i dont know why....the back of the bottle say "for pre 1989 cars" has the 76 logo on it and says "custom".... whats this stuff for, really?

If it say for pre 1989 cars, then it doesn't meet API SM or SL. If it has an API rating, it is probably SF. It is sold to people at the dollar store who cannot read English, are poor, and don't know any better. Now if you find some of the SL oils like TropArtic Synthetic Blend that dollar stores have been clearing out, then you have found a true bargain.

There is another post on this site about someone wondering what can be added to older oils to bring them up to/closer to modern specs....if you found out what SF are missing that are in todays oil, maybe you could add something like GM EOS, VSOT, or even STP to make the oil perform like it should.....is this possible?

Other than the base stock and additive package, the old oils are pretty much the same as the newer ones.

No, you can't add anything to make them like a SM oil. You would need to alter their basic chemistry to do that . . .it should be easy . . .if you own a modern refinery.

Current production, obsolete API spec'd oil is sold just about everywhere. Funny thing is that it's usually only a few cents cheaper than API SM oil.

ConocoPhillips IS making new oil to the old specs. Maybe they have a surplus of Group I base oil refining capacity and see a market for it. In the 99 Cents Only stores I have seen 76 Custom 30 and 40 as well as a Phillps brand of the same thing.

At least the Accell version of SF pre-1988 "ghetto oil" sold at walmart is a 10w40 multiweight.

What would happen if someone (non BITOG member) accidently used this oil in his late model car and did 5K OCI ???

Could the engine make it to 200K miles ?

The out of date API rating would make it motorcycle oil! They should be charging a few bucks extra a quart for it. heehee
