ill take a syn on sale before i pay full price on one esp since i run 5k mile oci's.... M1 per terry dyson via email convinced me to look elsewhere for over the counter syn oils. he basically said M1 is overrated by far and that PP is the best out for now... i believe him...right now i am on a bogo stash of synpower.

OK, I'll bite that M1 is a PAO (or mostly PAO product). In all candor, I could care less as it seems to work well in just about any application.

However, the findings that show that Syntec is *THAT* far away from M1 is suspect to me, Group III, ore Group IV-V. Looks like marketing to me.

While non-GC syntec holds up for a bit longer than Supertech Synthetic (that's about 60% of the price of Syntec), would an engine only last 500,000 miles on syntec rather than 550,000 miles on M1?

My ultimate point is: does it matter? Both syntec and M1 will serve most applications very well....

I think used oil analysis are good for seeing trends & problems in an engine. I think used oil analysis are much less usefull for comparing oils. I for instance use a used oil analysis to ascertain if I have coolent leaks, air intake leaks or gross wear metal numbers.

M1 all the way for me. According to a post here on BITOG,the ones I remember that are said to be PAO are the 0W40 and 15W50 (silver cap and not the extended performance). GTX worked really well for me back when I used to use it,but Syntec gave me bad startup noise on every car I tried it on.

No. . . . . . .

Oilguy hit the nail right on the head in his post. M1 meets GM4718m, Syntec does not. Little, if any, price difference. It's a no brainer to me.

I'm surprised Castrol doesn't meet that spec. They said they don't meet HTO-06 etiher, which isn't good.

Yeah clearly specific to a certain application but nevertheless something to go by. Syntec has always been priced about the same as Mobil 1, but has never been as good IMHO.

Syntec is not approved against Acura's new performance oil spec HTO-06 required for the RDX.

In the industry standard test (TEOST) to evaluate high temp deposit resistance, Syntec creates 5x more deposits than M1. We may not experience such severe test conditions in our everyday driving, by it's an industry standard test to compare apples to apples.

Which Castrol are we talking about here?
