Cummins diesel engines

In a few years, I plan to buy a big diesel truck for my farm. I am a Ford guy, and I hate to admit that Ford's diesel engins are not doing to well right now. I am wondering if a Dodge Ram 3500 with a Cummins diesel would be a better choice. I hope that Ford will resolve their problems, or at least Toyota will build a diesel truck. Chevy Duramax diesels are doing well too, but I wouldn't buy a Chevy if my life dependened on it! Please tell me what you think about Cummins diesel engines. And no comments about me hating Chevys!!!

I have always liked Ford trucks and still do. But it sounds like they are having engine problems as of late...........

The Cummins engine seems to always be bullet proof. Maybe I can start a company that sells Ford and Chevy trucks with the Cummins engines swapped in..........
 
When I was looking at getting a larger vehicle I figured out that it had to be diesel. With GM anf Ford it seemed that one bought a truck for everything else and put up with the powertrain, while a Dodge was much better as one bought it for the powertrain and put up with everything else :^)

Dodge seems to have done better with 'everything else' in the newer trucks and GM has done better in the powertrain, while Ford still seems to be struggling. I see old Dodge Cummins 350 trucks still twing backhoes, horse trailers, etc., while Ford and GM diesels from the same era seem largely gone.

I ended up with a Dodge diesel, and expect that it'll be the last large vehicle that I'll ever buy. While these trucks seem primarily designed for towing they're useful as a general purpose large vehicle if you get a crew/quad cab.

Now here IS the idea. Ford F-650 with Cummins or Cat engine mated to an Allison transmission and the Big Dana Rear-end.

I have 9 ford diesels. You couldnt give me a new one. The new one i bought ford bought from me.

The only problem is finnaly now that dodge had figured out how to build a real crew cab, NOT a exstended cab with goofy doors or a house with a useless bed. the front ends are god awefull ugly.
 
If i in fact needed a diesel pickup, the only choice IMO is the cummins. It is the only true medium duty diesel available in a pickup truck (from what i've been told anyway). I would prefer it to have a Aisin trans in it as well, but it's limited to maybe 1 or 2 models i beleive.

But you could always wait for the 1 ton 8.0L Hino Tundra coming out within the next 2 years. It's still kinda up in the air as of now though.
I've seen a 'prototype' picture of it, and it's HUGE.

As of 12/31/09, Navistar will no longer sell engines to Ford. The new 6.7L in house diesel will be high quality out of the gate, especially looking at the roll outs of the recent Ford products. I've seen specs of 720 lb ft and 390 hp.

If you have a couple of years yet; you will definately know if this new engine is good or bad.
 
A friend just bought a new F-250 with the twin turbo diesel. He says it is a monster of a truck in the towing department. This is a former OTR trucker whose recent vehicles have included a Dodge Cummins 1 ton, a Chevy 502 1 ton, and various other heavy duty trucks. He tows construction machinery day and day out, and loves this Ford.

Depends on the year of the Cummins. The new 6.7 Cummins are proving to be quite trouble prone, just like the International 6.0 and 6.4.

The EPA regs outpaced technology there for a couple years and diesel owners are paying for it in more ways than one.

Except that GM owned a large portion of Isuzu when the engine was designed and GM Powertrain was involved with it too...so it "could" be labeled a GM engine.
 
Yea my 6.4L was a beast when it was running. both weeks.

I really really liked that truck but I got tired of it cheating on me with the ford mechanic. That and the 9 Mpg it was getting tank after tank.

I do have a close business associate that has a 08 supercab shortbed 2x4 6.4L that cut the DPF off and has custom tuning that disables the EGR and adjust the fueling. He's hand calculating 17.3 MPG
 
I am in the market for a diesel for towing a medium sized bumper hitch trailer. It has to be an automatic.

I've ruled out the ford because of the 6.0L problems (I am in the market for a 2 year old truck with around 50k miles).

I'm now leaning towards the GM. As far as I can tell, the problem with the GM's is in the injectors, and in the Dodges is in the automatic transmissions.

Either way, I'm looking at a $5k plus repair bill if it goes bad. It's hard to tell on the internet how prevalent these problems are, just by reading the forums. My brother in law has an 06 dodge diesel and his transmission failed at 60k miles. My father in law has had 2 D-max's without any problems.

I like the GM better, but they all have their faults. I'm leaning towards the GM because replacing all 8 injectors with labor likely costs less than a new dodge transmission. On the other hand, used dodges are significantly cheaper to buy.

Can any diesel guys give me a few thoughts on this? More particularly, can anybody comment on the cost of injector repair vs. transmission? I am interested in an 06 Dmax.
 
Find a Dodge with a standard transmission. Problem solved.

Those are both good trucks and I would agree injectors would be less expensive than an automatic transmission. A good friend of mine reps for another oil company and has put over 160K on his DMAX without a hitch. I prefer the ride of the Chevrolet over the Dodge.

I prefer the ride and appearance of the GM trucks over the Dodge. I guess I just prefer automatics in pick-ups. Plus the Allison is the best part of this drivetrain.
