Am working to get to the killer dowel pin to check it on my 96 Ram CTD. Had a heck of a time getting the harmonic damper pulley off the crank, even though the bolts were perfect and rust free.

I tried knocking it and prying on it different ways. Was very hard to shimmy off. I had to use a bar to get some mechanical advantage, and managed to damage the pulley. How concerned should I be? If I need to buy and install a new one, not the end of the world, but would appreciate thoughts.

As long as the rubber is in tact I would just run it. The belt may make a little noise. Just file down the sharp edges.

However if you have money burnin a hole in your pocket it’s a good time to upgrade to a fluid damper

Yeah not sure I need to do that. When Inbought the truck, the idle was low. Now it isn’t, and runs smoothly as is. I guess I’ll know if it’s an issue by watching the belt edge for fraying.

I don't think they cost much to replace. $200? Honestly the truck is 20 years old, does it really owe you a dime? I would file it down a bit as its mushroomed in a bit. I would say it's your call, it may not even want to come off and you may be opening up a can of worms you don't want to get into.

I re read that you already have it off. I'd replace it since it's 24 years old and the rubber looks like its cracking.

I agree, it looks like some cracking going on. Not sure if these can slip like others do? I guess it comes down to cost.

That said, it'll come off much easier next time (anti-seize).

Don’t think it will slip, more like the balancer part will fall off. Yes to anti seize!!
