Cub Cadet hydro transmission oil

I have an 1971 IH Cub Cadet 107 with a hydrostatic transmission. The manual says I should use International Hytran oil. Unfortunately, its a bit on the expensive side in my area, and not to mention the thing takes six quarts.

Is there a suitable substitute for Hytran that I can get easily? What exactly is Hytran...more like gear lube, or motor oil?

Going to post this in the heavy equipment forum as well to see if any tractor guys know about it.

More like ATF...but I would use only the Hytran...those old Cub Hydrostatic transmissions are bulletproof...thousands of hours and only one fluid flush on our 105 (the 10HP Kohler) and it always worked perfectly....

I just picked up a vintage cub for a repower myself, and the concensus on the IH forums along with a few knowledgeable guys here seems to be hytran ONLY. A few guys have tried atf and utl with negative results. If you have a farm n' fleet near you, I just picked up their house brand case/IH fluid which meets the B6 specs- 15.99 for a two gallon jug, much better than dealer prices. Farm has a separate fluid for other apps, so I think this stuff should be OK. My unit is just three years older than yours, and I'd hate to ruin it by trying to save a buck by using the wrong fluid.

Many parts stores have a Hytran approved/rated oil for reasonable.
