Cruise Control switch

Guys, I am looking to buy a 2006 Corolla S.

One of the problems is the cruise control stick has broken off at the stem base. Looks like the steering may need to come off to repair. It is dangling by the wire.

Does anyone know how much labor it cost to fix if I want to replace the stick? I found the part itself cost about $100.

Will if affect the performance if were to just cut off the wire itself? It seems like the cruise control switch is part of the steering wheel assembly. Can the switch be replacesd separately or must the whole steering wheel be replaced?

if i'm thinking of the right style stick, it bolts into the steering wheel, with the airbag removed.
if it's anything like My Neon (the Toyota stalk looks similar enough.) it should go something like this.
1)Disconnect Battery
2)hold brake pedal to bleed off any residual charge.
(wouldn't Hurt to find and pull the airbag fuse)
3)wait a few min.(I've heard some airbag modules can retain a charge for up to 20 min.)
4)feel around the back side of the steering wheel, looking for a couple bolts. these should be the ones holding the airbag in place, remove them.
5)Carefully remove the airbag, and disconnect the electrical connection.
you should be able to see where the stalk screws into place, and the wires connected to it. undo them.
6) Connect wires and screw new stalk into place, reverse steps to install

somewhat sure this procedure I just copied and pasted off a random google search is the right one. I dont remember if the one I did was a 2002 or a 2004 but should be similar eh?

Disconnect the battery, wait 90 seconds, remove two small plastic covers on the side of the steering wheel, the airbag is connected with two torx bolts, I believe #35, it requires a torx socket to remove and a short extension and a ratchet, once the air bag is off disconnect the electrical connectors from it, remove the 19mm nut on the steering wheel, grab the wheel and wiggle it side to side to remove it from the splined shaft, the switch can then be removed.

It won't matter when you remove the wheel, as is won't alter the alignment. They typically only go on one way.
