So I have a FL-400S I found with a “creased” can - you can see some creasing on the can at the baseplate crimp. OK to use, or should I cut it open for science?

OMG! Don't even think about using that filter, your engine will explode, you will lose your hair, and women will find you repulsive. Get rid of it and wash your hand with holy water and maxlife atf, then run, don't walk, to the nearest house of worship and apologise to the filter gods for even thinking you could use an obviously defective filter. How dare you sir, how dare you.

I personally don't see anything wrong in the pictures.

If you say "creasing", it is probably manufacturing defect when the metal was extruded to create the can shape.
That’s what I meant to say. If I do use this filter, it’ll be on something I can monitor for deformation easily(two Toyotas or a Kohler Command 12).

Filter experts say not to use dented and creased filters. The damage could cause a stress riser in the metal, which could cause it to crack and leak during use - ie, pressure pusations, vibration, heat cycles.

Though IKD that the crease could cause damage by splitting open during operation. However, if you've purchased it recently w/receipt and you don't feel confident in using that filter, return it and get another.
OTOH, if the filter has been in your collection/filter stash and you've just pulled it out and discovered the crease, cut it open for review. And we thank you! (y)

very clean hands/nails for someone who changes their own oil ;-)

Kidding! I would use it without worry. Heck, I doubt I would have even noticed it.

Come to think of it. Most mechanics, auto lube shops & even the oil change dealers don't have the time to examine the oil filter they put on to the vehicle.

Looks ok to me.. Why do people have to show their dirty feet in their pics?
Tops of the feet I don't mind, it's when they start showing the bottom that gets me. My work involves printing photographers images and you wouldn't believe the amount of Senior images that show the bottom of their feet, disgusting.

These seniors can't bend their legs to see the bottom of their feet, so they take pictures to get the view. As to trimming the toenails, well they get a quote from the local bodyshop for extensive die grinder remedy.

Lubener say: "Why do people have to show their dirty feet in their pics?"
Did I ever tell you how I lost that job in the shoe store?
Let me guess, on your first day, you never came back from your first coffee break..

Is the crease in the red box? If so, looks more like a slight bulge.

Yep - that’s what I’m referring to.
It doesn't look any worse than a formed edge on the flutes on the dome end of a filter. Looks like it actually sticks above the can surface - true? If so, it wasn't dented inward by an external impact.
