CarQuest vs Purolator TL vs Motorcraft used oil filters cut and rated. Oil filters were in service for ~5,000 miles. 1 clear loser!

CarQuest R84145 and Purolator TL14477 are direct competitors with identical external dimensions. Used in many Toyota engines (1.8L-2.5L). Motorcraft FL-400S is used in many Jaguar/Ford models. This one was used in a Jaguar S-Type V6 3.0L.

Pretty shocking result. How does one get away with putting a small filter element in a large can and pretending all is OK? I will no longer be using that brand. I have 1 unused filter left and it's going in the trash.

The real question is which filter is made to factory specs? Some of these jobber filters are made to fit many applications and others are more specific.

What you got with the CQ is the lowest tier Protec equivalent using a combo valve (takes up a lot of space) Same space as thread end bypass piece would in the equivalent OG Wix labeled filter. Doubtful you will find that same filter in AAP/CQ store now, most likely PG made Red. The M&H "Puro" Tech TL jobber looks decent. Doesn't look to be US made (date code), guessing China. The MC looks ok, better than many. Thanks for vid.

Your also comparing a $5 filter with two $9 filters.
You're correct but that price for the TL on Amazon currently is high. Normally and in many/most instances the TLs go for $2.40. I regularly follow the TL14610 pricing, and $2.40 is normal price but currently it's $9+. lol It will go down again and then the buyers and/or resellers will swoop in and price spike again. The TL really a $2-3 filter. Not worth $9 ever.

It certainly looks smaller but you really don't know how much filter there is without taking the media out and measuring it flat. Your also comparing a $5 filter with two $9 filters.
I purchased eight of the Purolator TL14477 oil filters from Amazon for $2.40 each. It was at this price for a long time (>1 year). Only recently Amazon hiked the price to $9.

No more CarQuest filters for me

That Purolator had holes in the center tube that don't look like most Purolator filters with holes.
As noted, not US made and in all likelihood the topic TL "Puro" in name only. Iirc another similar TL posted previously made in China. Another clue, topic TL uses coil compression spring, all US made always have stamped flat spring. So, an M&H filter labeled Purolator. Unless a very recent change, TL14610 still made in US and uses louvers like other Puro.
