Not only is it where I find my beater cars it's where I get unlicensed help!!!

Last friday bought another clunker... needs exhaust, charged battery, alternator, rust work... but it's the rare wagon body style of my car and lots of sedans out there can supply needed whatever. Logistics kicked me in the nether regions though and I wasn't able to get to it in a timely manner with the trunk full of tools and spare parts it deserves. Snow is forecast and I promised the PO I'd get it out so he could plow around it.

So I posted in the "automotive help" section that I wanted a tow, 32 miles, and there was $80 cash in it for whomever could do it. (If I couldn't have it done that cheap I'd have made time to get up there.) Some 20ish year old kid answered my ad; he is presently looking to buy his first tow truck but has "scrapped 1500 cars" using his pickup truck and equipment trailer. Uses a come-along to yank dead stuff up his trailer ramps.

Told him I had no key with the car and the car had no motivation but at least the wheel was straight and tires held air. He said he'd check to see if he could get in to load it.

He calls me unexpectedly (when I'm at work!) with the excited announcement that he got into the prior owners driveway just fine and already loaded my car! Great, say I, and he plugs my home address in his GPS and is on his way. His payment hidden in another vehicle on my property.

Wife calls and this goofball is backed in crooked and would really like the key to unlock the steering wheel. Alas, it's with me, as the dude said he didn't need it. So he rolls my car straight down the ramp in the dark at night with no working headlights or anything. Lack of power brakes might have suprised him as he ran over my (ice) sand bucket.

This is great! My $80 went right in someone's pocket for doing a couple hours' work. Nothing skimmed off for "the man"! Kid said he had something going the other way so this backhaul was very efficient for him. Maybe I'll get him a little closer to his goal of a real tow truck too!

So does anyone ever hire help through CL? Movers? Painters? Etc. It's already the awesomest way to get a real cheap car/tow...

i had a 40 gallon water heater new in the box with a 6 year warranty (lockinvar/a.o smith) installed with new unions and my old junk taken away for $400 off an add on c/l. Licensed plumber working on the side.

I like it too and use it as much as possible. Still, at the end of the day always remember you don't know who you are dealing with and just how many screwy deals there are out there on CL. I don't mean the friendly Nigerian I send you way big overpayment you send back the rest obvious stuff but all the more home grown things. No title, Liens on titles, stolen, flood cars and reborn VIN cars ect. Depending on the state these can be anything from a bargain to possession of stolen property and often just a major financial and work hassle to get legal.
Beyond that there are the usual stunts like promise you the item and sell it before you get there or come back with the rest of the money if he gets a better offer. The list goes on and on. Better to make sure you take all the money with you and leave with the item right then and there. There are a lot of real creeps out there. Let the buyer beware goes double for vehicles.
Aside from all the bad things yes you sure can get some great deals for both the buyer and seller. It has come to cost a small fortune to run newspaper ads and you don't even get to post a picture so CL is a no brainer as long as you are careful.

With so many experienced people out of work and looking for side jobs, you can find many people willing to work for cash under the table.

I notice lots of people on Craigslist are wanting to barter goods and services.

The underground economy is something else. Last week I got offers for some tree cutting (NO!) and drive-by steaks... from a contractor-labelled pickup... with New Mexico plates

I know a lady and her husband is an electrician (licensed for 20 years) and he hasn't been able to find any work since the housing / building bubble burst. He does side jobs here and there for cash, but some people are willing to hire a stranger from a Home Depot parking lot to do shoddy electrical work in their home.

With the economy the way it is, some people have no choice but to look for work on CL (mechanics, plumbers, painters, tutors for school, guitar/paino lessons...etc.

I wouldn't mind using CL for for low-skill labor like pruning shrubs or small tree branches or digging fence posts. No way would I trust them for electrical or towing. I also wouldn't trust them if there's a chance they could get hurt (like cleaning gutters on a 2nd story home) and sue you

The best thing for CL is giving away old stuff like water heaters, furniture , etc, that would normally cost you money for hauling

Had a guy on Craigslist haul away 2 truck loads of wood, old toys and other misc junk for $100. Would have taken me two trips to the dump at $25/each. Plus he loaded and left in 30 minutes since he had a truck with a trailer.

I've done something pretty crazy on craigslist. I was a carpool driver for hire between SF bay area and orange county, picking up people every other week and partner up with another regular rider of mine. When his or my car is full, we overflow passenger to each other.

Sometimes there are no passengers, I will load furniture (war chest), car seats, etc. My typical ride has 2 paying passengers that I charge for and on average I get to go down to orange county to see my girl friend (now wife) for free and some extra cash after paying gas.

I've even work out a relay scheme with people that go from san diego to orange county, that will drop off their passengers and I'll carry them up.

After my wife graduated, I no longer carpool to orange county, but still use craigslist to buy small items used for much lower than retails (routers, modem, laptop lock, refrigerators, used car bumper shell, soil, Tivo, furniture, appliance, etc).

ebay is too expensive for small items now that we have craigslist.

That's an eBay owned craigslist knockoff.

ebay also has 25% stake in CL.

The only thing that drives me nuts is the sob stories. It's not my fault you have four kids, you're broke and your car blew up. Oh and since my car was priced to sell and you elected to look at it on your next payday, I didn't hold it and it is now gone. Tough noogies.

I tried a few times to buy used computer parts from CL, but gave it up. Most of them seem to have been posted by teenagers who had no sense of business - Post an add, but not read their mail anytime soon, then read it when it was convenient to them and expect you to respond immediately. Or be evasive when you ask details about an item, such as whether it works....

+1. Kijiki sucks in Vancouver.

I have 3 of the best lawn mowers I have ever had from Craigslist free stuff. I drive my cars home, it is a test. If they can't make it on their own, the price has to be small. They leave on trailers or ramp trucks. I think I have only sold a couple runners.
