friend daugheter in college answered a craigs list ad for a "personal assistant " job, guy in another city sent her a $2900 cashiers check or mo asked her to take money and buy stuff from 3 people in atlanta and ship the items to him.
what is the scam here? the cashing of the check?

Sounds like multiple levels of scam to me. Cashing the check/mo is probably not a good idea.

The check is a fake. Bank takes 3-4 days to realize the fake check, by that time, she has already bought the stuff and sent it out. Her account then gets the check amount withdrawn by the bank. TELL HER NO!!!

They just showed that scam on ABC News. The reporter answered the ad and was told to send money overseas. When he called the US based guy he was verbally threatened over the phone.People make easy money many ways....Its the (now) American way.Honest people need to get smarter to outwit these crooks.

Craig's List?

It's face to face or not at all, and even then bring armed buddies and carry with a BUG. I am not kidding.

Check in her name? Or? See if she can cash the check and OOPS lost the money.

I am not recommending this. Suggesting serving and all that.

Why not just have the Police take it over. After all, the scammers don't know what the "mark" looks like.

If the mark is to buy from three different folks, then why not pick up the items. It's possible the three "sellers" are in on the scam.

I'd get the check and just go to the police with it and let them track it down.

CraigsList scams involve PayPal fake emails saying a transfer was done. Or saying they will buy your car but need a used car quote from from "AutoQuote" and they supply a link. I assume its to a dangerous website. Some want you to respond to get your real email addr and then they send you porn invites.

+1 Even then check the bills to be sure they aren't counterfeit.
