Where I live it's $12.99 for the tiny Briggs or John Deere filter vs. $3.77 for a compatible over-sized Fram PH3614. That difference almost covers the cost of two quarts of a quality brand name synthetic oil. I suspect that you did a like for like replacement of one tiny low market volume filter for another, and that's why you saw so little savings. Try up-sizing the filter, which will lower the cost, increase oil capacity, and increase the surface area for cooling.
