ive got a crack in my windshield that started from the base under the wiper arm, and worked its way up to the 1/4 of the windshield(height wise) and started to to left towards the driver (me)... its about 4inches up and 4 inches left... i went to a windshield repair guy, and he said that he cant fix anythign more then 3 cm... i was like but cant u at least drill to prevent further cracking and he said no, u have to change the whole windshield...

i think he just wants to make money,

i think he can drill (they drill, fill the drilled hole...) to prevent more cracking.

what do you guys think?

I agree, can't be repaired, has to be replaced.

The crack has spread and it will not stop. If you have a smal chip, that can be repaired but likely will not last, its 50/50.

Some of the newew vehicles, the glass is part of structual rigidity of the vehicle (up to 50%) and should be replaced.

Don't you have comprehensive insurance to cover it?

comprehensive insurance

Yes. This is the one thing that makes it all worthwhile. I've known many of my more frugal friends run totally "naked" on older cars. I just say that one stone from a passing truck is enough to pay for it for several years. It also covers vandalism and you can usually add "road service" for another $5-10 a year. My buddy lived in town ...had his tires slashed with a bunch of other cars..no comprehensive ...$200 and a tow for $50.

You've got a creeper ..and if you don't want the thing turning into a crunchable spider web of little simulated crushed ice chunks, you had better ante up for a replacement.

Next time you reup the insurance ...get the comprehensive ..even on a beater. My insurance just requires a phone call ..they give me an 800 number ..they refer me to a local shop ..no deductable ..no questions asked.

Stop crack drilling works on aluminum and steel sheet, but not glass. Wait until spring and have it replaced. Most cracks start from rock hits near the edge of the windshield. A 3" plastic guard around the edge of the glass would prevent most cracks...

It has been my experiance that "comprehensive" insurance is reasonably priced until you start using it. After a couple of claims, it ain't cheap anymore....

You can buy good used windshields from the wrecker. They like you to go down their and look at the glass before they take it out. Then all you have to do is find a guy to put it in for a case of beer.

To be honest, I wouldn't fix it. I have a 4" crack in my windshield coming up from the drivers wiper arm area and it doesn't bother me. If it was causing me difficulty when driving at night I would replace it. Driving a rusted out car is much more hazardous in my opinion.

btw

I some areas you will be ticketed for defective equipment for a cracked WS.

On the price of comprehensive. I hit 7 deer in 10 yrs. These accidents are covered under comp., I never noticed any increase in my insurance. These are not accidents that insurance companies are allowed to charge against you, acts of god/nature like tornado, hurricane etc.

Good point Mike, a friend of mine borrowed my truck and hit a deer five minutes down the road. I had 500 deductible and that was an expensive trip. I now have 100 deductible on deer hits now. He had the furniture delivered the next day. Truck was fixed in two months. And you are right it doesn't go on your record. He said the deer jumped out of no where. I drove him back and the deer was gone, someone had already picked it up. I was amazed at how much damage it did to my F-150.

I was told that the crush resistance in a rollover depends partly on the windshield. If the windshield is cracked badly, you could get several inches more crush. Could be the difference between bruised and cracked skull. I would replace it. That said, I do have a stone chip with a 1.5-inch crack coming off it. I'm assuming that is not big enough to be a problem, but on second thought, maybe I should get that thing replaced.

Every car I've ever owned has had a cracked windshield. Maybe I'm not very lucky. Unfortunately in this state a windshield is $400 because companies are geared toward insurance companies and free boxes of steaks. Used ones are still over $300.

What insurance company do you use? Mine isn't based on any user "profile". It's a flat rate based on the potential for loss. It's not like collision. Why would you want a tree falling on your car (or a sand storm, flood, whatever) totalling a perfectly good $2500 car for the sake of about $100 every 6 months to a year?? Add to it the road service option ..and one or two tows balances the sheet.

I would never consider owning a car without this coverage. Why would I bother taking care of a car good enough to go 200k and then allow some random incident make it junk??

You'll spend that much on one new windshield or even one turn signal lens assembly.
