Coyote Tick Oil Choice

I've done 2 (short interval) oil changes on m Mustang. The tick popped up slight after the first and it's louder with the second. I drive next to concrete or brick walls pretty often, where it's most noticable, and it bugs me.

I'm using Kirkland 5w30 right now, I'm only 100 miles in to this change, but I'm going to dump it. Yes, it bugs me that much.

What is a good next one to try? I'm considering:

Valvoline Extended Protection 5w30
ESP .... 0w or 5w?

I really want to avoid Ceretec as a fix.

My vote goes to ESP 5w30, I have been using that in my Corvette since the second oil change and I love how well it holds its viscosity

I know ESP 0w30 keeps my Subarus quiet for the whole oci. Valvoline Extended Protection is quiet for the first 2-3k miles. I haven’t tried ESP 5w30 yet.

Of course oil can’t fix a mechanical problem if that’s the case.

Honestly, I get a little lost in the differences between 0w and 5w ESP variants, and how they've changed over the years.

5w30 ESP no longer uses esters in its base oil but is likely to hold its viscosity better than the 0w30 ESP. So for higher performance applications the 5w30 is probably the better choice (that being said I’m tempted to use the 0w30 because of its ester content and therefore it’s likely to keep the engine cleaner in the long run)

Of those two maybe esp but I'm partial to castrol euro for noise. I've had great results with castrol 5w-40.

HPL PCMO 5w30, hemis can be very chattery and mine is very quiet right now. The oil has very high quantities of moly which may be one reason it is so quiet.

This engine needs 10 qts, and I'm going to dump it at 5K anyway, so I'm a little hesitant to jump on to the HPL bandwagon.

I’ll second what @BrendanC said. Although I have not run the HM variant, I do run the regular Valvoline Extended Protection. I was running Mobil 1 Extended Performance for a bit, (since new & first 3 OCI’s) then switched over to Valvoline Extended Protection and my ‘Yote has been noticeably quieter, especially in summer months.

BTW: I do 4k intervals and engine stays quiet the length of interval.

Hps 5w30. The 5w20 completely eliminated the tick that’s been there for 100k on my rogue with a 2.5.

I work with two people who have these engines and this "noise" I've watched them run everything from Kirkland to 5w50 M1 and nothing seems to make a difference. Is it just a characteristic of the engine?

Yes. They're well known for it and Ford says it's normal. Some have speculated it's an artifact of the oval cam gear causing a less smooth chain pattern / slap.

For add-in fluids, Ceratec does seem to cure it for most. I just don't want to go there.

My son had a 5.0 Mustang with that ticking. I listened to it and it seemed (to my ear) to come from the fuel injectors.
