Can a tire removal machine make these scrapes on alloy rims? I had new rubber put on Saturday at Town Fair Tire and after I washed the HHR I saw these gouges and scrape marks on the rims..pics are from 3 different tires..front left came away unscathed somehow.

I was told on another forum that these marks could not have been made by a tire remover that any damage would be at the lip......I want to know for sure before I go back today and raise Cain with them.

I don't know how their tire removers work but I seem to recall the piece that goes under the lip and another "guide" that rests on top...tires were very dirty when brought in but still...

I hope this damage can be fixed...not happy at all...have I got a case to go back and complain? I'm pretty upset if they did cause this damage by being lazy... Rims were pretty pristine even with 76K on them as I am pretty anal about keeping things nice and would have remembered doing something like this..especially to 3 wheels. I had this happen to me once before when getting tires for alloys at a place called VIP Auto...similar marks on a 2000 Maxima alloys

So could this damage have been down by a tire remover?

Thanks

That's why I always was at least the wheels prior to having tire work done. I then inspect them prior to leaving. On occasion, I'll have the store manager look at the tires prior to work so we both agree on their condition prior to work being performed.

My guess would be no. I have had 2 sets of wheels ruined by tire monkeys. There would be a huge line around the very edge or lip of the wheel. It is unmistakeable. Thay looks like car wash damage to me.

Very good idea.

Hmmmmmm never have taken it through an automated wash.......Isnt there a guide that also runs in the area that is shown?? I know there is the thing around the lip but though there was another piece too

looks like they used an old Coats 4040 tire machine instead of the new fangled ones for mag wheels. The 4040 uses a long bar and could do that kind of scrapes to a wheel with a lot of negative offset like yours.

See if there tire machine spins the wheel or if it stays stationary.

That looks like tire machine damage. Could be using a corghi type machine and didn't set it correctly, happens more frequently then you would believe.

Like johnny said, go back and be calm but also be persistent. They should prove to you beyond reasonable doubt that it wasn't there fault. They'll deny it at first probably, but don't just walk away, beware of smooth talkers.

I will check in with them tonight......which machine would cause this damage? Tire spins the wheel or stationary

YES! And you aren't the first to have this type of wheel damage at a Town Fair Tire Shop. The spokes of your wheels appear to be flush with the outer lip of the wheel (most wheels have their spokes recessed slighty) which seems to be the common thread with the other damaged rims I have seen.

Thanks Chris....I think they use the one that you showed in the last clip....I am so anal about the car (parking away from other cars in lots etc) I would have known if I did any damage to the wheels like that.

Not sure on what recourse I have though...guess I can speak to the manager and if he won't help ask for the district manager. I don't want new rims, just these ones repaired....who can fix damage like this?? A body shop?

Thanks Roger and JT....I had a feeling I wasn't hallucinating

Brought the car to Town Fair and they are ordering me 3 new rims..the 4th has a slight scuff but not major like the other 3. I was very surprised and pleased with the way this was handled by the store manager!

I had a thought of really pushing for all 4 but I think replacing the 3 with the most gouges was pretty good.
