Could this be the reason some people wake up at 3am?

Amityville horror?

Waking up at 3am happens to me as well. Mid 50's. Melatonin doesn't work and I am groggy the next day. Benadryl works fairly well but puts me in a foul mood the next day.

I am trying magnesium glycinate which seems to help more than anything listed above. The best thing for sleeping through the night for me has been to get some type of exercise earlier in the day.

Former 15-year Ambien user, I discovered these recently and I found they are a are a viable replacement for Rx. Some mornings I sleep all the way to my alarm, some mornings I wake up about half an hour before it goes off. It's just nice to be off Ambien, I think it was starting to have an effect on mental clarity.

Of the 42 years that I worked, the last 35 years straight, I work 3pm-11pm. And if I worked overtime, it was 3pm-3am(not 11am-11pm).
Now that I've been retired since 2014, I go to bed around 9pm and get up at 3am-ish(could be 4am) as I am so tired that I can't keep my eyes open any longer and my body needs to lay down w/pillow & covers.

This didn't happen right away, it happened sometime during the first few years of myretirement. My body clock just changed. I don't get out of work at 11pm OR 3am anymore in order to need getting up at 6-7am or later. Now, I get up, start my coffee, do my internet reading, computer work, and by 8am I have more done(quietly) than most people do during the remainder of their day. Then I start my work outside(weather permitting) yard/garden, grocery shopping, help others/neighbors, Dr/DDS app's, blood/lab work, go to the gym or workout of some sort(biking). By 9pm, I am done-in!

I do not like to use any type of sleep aide unless on vacation and sleeping in a strange place. I believe after a while you just get accustomed to the sleep aide and need a higher dose. I know it works for some people but I prefer to eliminate naps and go to bed about the same time every night.

That is legalized in my state so I don't have to worry about going to jail :D . Over the summer I pulled a muscle in my back really bad. I lived on the floor for a week. I couldn't bend so sitting on the couch was excruciating and, while I could lay in bed, I couldn't get in or out of bed easily. It took me 30 minutes to get into bed and laid down then 45 minutes to get out a few hours later. I just could not move. Slept on the floor and basically crawled around the house the entire time.

I didn't want to take all of the muscle relaxants and prednisone (thankfully I found out that I don't have any bad discs or anything crushed) and was given some gummies to try. It actually helped relax the muscle so I didn't keep hurting myself. I also discovered that the sleep ones really help me get a good sleep.

I can fall asleep and "sleep" for 8 hours but I normally wake up more tired than when I went to bed. Everyone said sleep apnea. If this helps me sleep and I wake up feeling great, it's not sleep apnea. It's just poor quality sleep.

Formula 1 practice is on this early in the morning…..
Although I'm a F1 fan, often it is the best sleep aid for me... I'll start streaming it at 9pm and often I'll be asleep by 9:30...
As for melatonin, somewhere I heard that less dosage is better, and I think it is for me, as I don't wake up after the melatonin wears off.

Bay-area psychiatrist Scott Alexander, who runs the rationalist site Astral Codex Ten, has done a lot of research into Melatonin. He says that the optimum dose for most people is 0.3 Mg.
