Could it be?

Nissan is finally ditching the CVT? I'm curious about the other models now since I leased a Rogue last week with the intentions of keeping it after three years.

In my opinion, CVT's were nothing but a stop-gap in an era where 6-speed auto's were common and 7-speed units (Mercedes) were the outlier. To me, the big change came when ZF introduced the 8HP. Wonderful transmission: compact, efficient, completely modular. Since then, we've seen the release of more 8, 9, and 10 speed auto's. When you consider the ratio spread, traditional automatic's quickly caught up and matched the "benefits" of the CVT, all while providing the pre-conceived notion of how an "automatic" transmission should feel.

Now, I'm no hater of the CVT in concept. It's proven itself for years in powersports equipment and the like, however I never felt they had a place outside hybrids. In that package, they're totally acceptable. Outside that, they're really just a quirky feature that doesn't provide much benefit. Nissan (Jatco) are one of the best CVT producers, and even those leave something to be desired. What I don't understand is how something so simple can be screwed up so easily. Case in point:

Saturn Vue VT25
Early Nissan/Mopar Jatco JF011E
Subaru TR580/690

None of those were any good. However, the ZF CFT30 proved to be very reliable in the Ford 500. Perfect? No. But better than most. Nissan also stepped up and improved their CVT's since their intro. All that being said, I'll still take a good ol' step-ratio auto.

I consider the move from the CVT job security at this point, since I work at the engine plant. Nissan needs to get the sales up and I feel this is a step in the right direction. I've also heard about the improvements in the CVT recently so expect better longevity out of my Rogue than previous gens.

We currently have a 400Z (fairladyz) parked in the front of the building...It is very nice

Maybe Nissan should have reverse engineered Honda's CVTs. Have have a few with over 200,000 miles still doing fine while 70,000 mile Nissan CVT's are already dead.

I wonder if this is a day late and a dollar short as OEM's look to ditch ICE for EV.

"Big" vehicles haven't gone to CVT and by the looks of it they won't (think SUV and anything with >3,500lb towing). Anything smaller sure seem to be on the path to be EV-only in a few years.

I have to say, I've been surprised at how well the 6+ speed automatics have fared. I would not have guessed that transmission reliability would go up as gear ratios got added. I have to think the controllers and the integration have played a big part (DBW allows the ECU to pull engine power so that no shift is made under power).

I agree. You would think they'd have at least attempted that in the last 17 years..

Maybe...but I can tell you that were developing a 1.5t engine that will come out soon...and even a 3cyl

Who knows. Might be a dead project--sometimes companies have multiple irons in the fire, "just in case" projects even, to cover all bases. If Nissan can't get enough batteries then they have to do something. And as we all know, range anxiety is a real problem--so over the next couple years I could see a market for a series hybrid setup similar to Volt. [Chevy may not have had success but perhaps they were just ahead of their time. Who knows, some technologies flop only to do well later, look at EV's as a case in point.]

My neighbor recently put her 80,000 mile Suzuki Kisashi in the shop for the dead Jatco unit. $3,000 later, she has that car back. I didn't want to tell her what to do, but when it all started, I offered to go car shopping with her to look for an Accord or Camry.

My jaw dropped when I saw the Suzuki back in the driveway. I wouldn't take a Jatco CVT car as a gift.

Bingo. I'd go back to a manual any day of the week (not hating, just lazy) before I ever dream of any CVT, but especially a JATCO. If it was a gift, I'd sell it for whatever I could get to go buy *anything* else.

I'd not get too excited just yet. Nissan markets the Pathfinder as a towing vehicle, but a lot of folks (wisely IMO) want nothing to do with towing and a CVT no matter how high Nissan rates it (it's a lot IIRC).

I'd wager Altimas/Rogues etc. will be rolling off the line with CVT's a good while yet.
