My wife (who actually knows a thing or two about cars) told me that our old neighbor is getting a new engine for her 2005 Escape after her old one "died". The car has 180,000 on the odometer and the transmission has never been serviced. I told my wife to pass along that she will be very lucky to make it to 250k on that transmission and if the new/remaned engine cost more than a few grand then it was a poor choice to keep that car going.

Well the neighbor decided to go ahead with putting another engine in the car for the low low price of $6,500. I have no idea where she is getting the engine from or what the breakdown is on the cost of install. I also know that her credit is God awful. But $6,500? I could buy a decent used one with half the miles for that.....

$6,500? Are they putting an LS7 in it?

That's what I was wondering? Keep in mind she has possibly the worlds worst credit and is probably paying 48% on top of the 6,500. She really is a nice lady and I would love to help her out, but she already didn't listen to my suggestion once......

Wow, and in 6 months or so she'll probably need a transmission. Ouch.......A trade in, or selling it, then put the $6,500 for the engine towards another car would have been a much wiser choice IMO.

Now you know why she has bad credit. Not terribly good with money.

.

An unreal decision for sure.

Hard to fathom that kind of investment in a vehicle that is likely near the end of its useful life anyway...

Thats not too high if they are replacing lots of other parts too and having a $100\hr shop doing the work. We did a 350 in a 90's chevy truck. We added in some profit on the gm crate engine, mounts, hoses, radiator etc. All said and done that went up to $6k by the time we were done parts and labor. Labor was about $1500 iirc.

I had a 2005 escape had 242K miles on it before I sold it a few months ago. Most reliable car I owned from new..rust was eating it away. No way it was worth 6500 for a new engine.

im sure thats a pretty expensive rebuild with the timing chains, runners etc. Definatly not your average pushrod rebuild.

What a way to do business. It's unethical.

+1 this ^^^^^^^

6500 sounds insane.
I found remanufactured hemi's for 3000 plus shipping and I found freight shipping for 800.
Alright. Plus install I guess that's close, for a new engine. I would scrap the vehicle personally.
